Netflix is now the streaming home for Down Low, the recently released Zachary Quinto and Lukas Gage comedy movie that was released throughout 2023.

Directed by Rightor Doyle (the writer of the two-season Netflix series Bonding), the LGBTQ+ R-rated comedy is about a divorcee, Gary, who hires a boundary-free sex worker to give him a massage. After discovering that the father of two isn’t quite as experienced in this arena as he initially led on, Cameron helps Gary by guiding him through his new life and getting him on “plungr”, an anonymous gay hookup app.

Quinto and Gage lead the cast with other actors involved, including Judith Light, Simon Rex, Sebastian Arroyo, Christopher Reed Brown, and Dominique Lawson.

The movie is making its SVOD debut today via the first window deal Netflix in the United States holds with Sony Pictures. Down Low is distributed by Sony’s Stage 6 Films division.

What do we mean by SVOD debut? It’s the first time it’s been available through a streaming subscription service where you get it as part of your membership. It previously debuted on VOD services (where you have to pay to own or rent the title) in October 2023. It first debuted at SXSW in March 2023.

Other regions will be getting Down Low in the months and years to come, but we don’t have specifics.

Should You Watch Down Low on Netflix?

There are not too many critics’ reviews for the movie, even available, with only 12 being listed on RottenTomatoes at the time of publishing, landing it a 67% score.

Louisa Moore perhaps summarized all the reviews best when publishing for Screen Zealots last May, concluding, “The film is a series of successful hits and dreadful misses, but the parts that work are hilarious. Your reaction to this boundary-pushing dark comedy will depend on your individual tolerance for progressive humor and unorthodox storytelling.”

On Metacritic, the movie holds a 48/100, while on IMDb, the audience score so far is 5.3/10.
