Hello and welcome to your end-of-week recap of what’s new on Netflix for March 8th. We’ll be digging into the 22 new releases that have touched down on Netflix this week, plus looking at the top 10s for today and the past week and what’s heading your way over the weekend.

As we laid out when we covered this week’s upcoming titles last Sunday, it was set to be much quieter in terms of the amount of output, but there have definitely been a few surprises this week and, better yet, some excellent new releases so let’s dig in:

Best New Releases on Netflix This Weekend

Damsel (2024)

Rating: PG-13
Language: English
Genre: Action, Adventure, Fantasy
Director: Juan Carlos Fresnadillo
Cast: Millie Bobby Brown, Ray Winstone, Angela Bassett
Writer: Dan Mazeau
Runtime: 108 min / 1h 48m

One of Netflix’s big-budget fantasy movies just dropped on Netflix today and will undoubtedly do big numbers in the top 10s throughout the weekend, thanks to its cast led by Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown.

The plot revolves around a princess who believed she was being set up to marry a handsome prince, only to find out she’s been sold down the river to be trapped in a cave with a fire-breathing dragon.

Our review, published this morning by Andrew Morgan, wasn’t overly kind, saying that the movie essentially wasted Millie Bobby Brown, who is at the height of her career right now. Morgan concluded:

“Damsel is a very average, very thin, & often boring letdown for fans of Millie Bobby Brown’s previous Netflix output. While its messaging is in the right place, we can’t ride with a character we don’t know.”

Your Lucky Day (2023)

Rating: R
Language: English
Genre: Thriller
Director: Dan Brown
Cast: Angus Cloud, Elliot Knight, Jessica Garza
Writer: Dan Brown
Runtime: 89 min / 1h 29m

As we reported yesterday, Your Lucky Day makes its SVOD debut today (that means it’s the first time it’s been available as part of a subscription) on Netflix US. It serves as one of the last movies of the young actor Angus Cloud, who sadly passed away last year under the most tragic of circumstances.

Here’s what you can expect from the movie which received rave reviews when it debuted late last year.

“After a dispute over a winning lottery ticket turns into a deadly hostage situation, the witnesses must decide exactly how far they’ll go—and how much blood they’re willing to spill—for a cut of the $156 million.”

The Wave (2015)

Rating: R
Language: Norwegian
Genre: Action, Drama, Thriller
Director: Roar Uthaug
Cast: Kristoffer Joner, Ane Dahl Torp, Jonas Hoff Oftebro
Writer: John Kåre Raake, Harald Rosenløw-Eeg, Martin Sundland
Runtime: 105 min / 1h 45m

If you were or are a fan of Netflix’s Troll (quite a few of you must have watched it given it got a sequel order and ranks the highest among the most-watched non-English language movies). In that case, we should definitely put The Wave on your radar, which returned to Netflix quietly yesterday.

The Norwegian action thriller is about a small community that is facing imminent destruction from an oncoming tsunami and it’s down to one geologist to save them all.

We’ll have more top titles added this week via our what to watch roundup.
