What to Watch on Netflix This Weekend

A Family Affair (2024)

Rating: PG-13
Language: English
Genre: Comedy, Drama, Romance
Director: Richard LaGravenese
Writer: Carrie Solomon
Runtime: 111 min / 1h 51m

Netflix’s big new movie of the week, and probably for the entirety of June, is undoubtedly A Family Affair, led by three heavyweights: Nicole Kidman, Zac Efron, and Joey King.

In our review published this morning, Andrew Morgan gave it a three-star rating, concluding:

“Overall, A Family Affair is more than its exaggerated rom-com marketing thanks to a cast & crew who cared enough for its story & characters to bring its audience in to the real coming-of-age arc it wants to present.”

Lovesong (2017)

Rating: TV-MA
Language: English
Genre: Drama, Romance
Director: So Yong Kim
Cast: Riley Keough, Jena Malone, Jessie Ok Gray
Writer: So Yong Kim, Bradley Rust Gray
Runtime: 84 min / 1h 24m

As we’re in the month of pride, Netflix has been (quietly, it must be said) adding a slew of LGBTQ movies, and one that came out today is a must-see.

The plot revolves around the relationship between two friends blossoming while on a long road trip.

When the movie first opened in theaters seven years ago, it was well-reviewed by critics. Many were impressed by the acting of the two leads and the story itself. For the Los Angeles Times, Katie Walsh said, “A character study of this relationship, casually yet carefully sketched out by Kim in subtle but meaningful gestures and glances. Much is communicated through the eyes, searching for answers in the void of what’s not said, but felt.”

Supacell (Season 1)

Number of episodes: 6
Rating: TV-MA
Language: English
Genre: Action, Adventure, Drama
Cast: Tosin Cole, Nadine Mills, Eric Kofi-Abrefa, Calvin Demba, Josh Tedeku, Adelayo Adedayo
Writer: Rapman
Runtime: 52 mins

The next big project from Netflix UK came out this week in the form of a superhero drama from Rapman. Set in South London, the series revolves around a group of people who all develop superpowers.

Reviews have been mostly positive across the board, with our friends at ReadySteadyCut handing it a four-star rating, saying the show “is not your average superhero show and is another bold win for Rapman, who clearly has important stories to tell about real people and places.”

The Flash (2023)

Rating: PG-13
Language: English
Genre: Action, Adventure, Fantasy
Director: Andy Muschietti
Cast: Ezra Miller, Michael Keaton, Sasha Calle
Writer: Christina Hodson, John Francis Daley, Jonathan Goldstein
Runtime: 144 min / 2h 24m

Finally, ending on another superhero title, we come to The Flash, the big-budget DC movie that ultimately is one of the last movies that bookmarked an entire era at DC, with James Gunn now running the show.

The run-up to this movie was fascinating. Whether it was Tom Cruise’s bizarre intervention praising the title or the shitshow surrounding the movie’s lead, it’s a miracle this movie even made it out.

Here’s what you can expect if you missed The Flash in theaters alongside everyone else last year:

“When the Flash uses his unique powers to alter a tragedy in his past, he causes a time paradox that could devastate the present — and the future.”

As a final footnote: Yes, this movie features George Clooney for a matter of seconds, and that has justified our use of that image as our featured one. Sorry if you got your hopes up for another Clooney movie!
