A24 Movie: Talk to Me (2023)

Welcome to your end-of-week recap of what’s new on Netflix. We’ll be honest, it’s been a tranquil week when it comes to new releases. Sure, it had a few Netflix Originals, but it was missing the breadth of usual weekly drops. Below, we’ll walk you through our top picks for the weekend, the complete list of new releases, and what’s been trending in the Netflix top 10s all week.

Don’t forget that April is just around the corner. We’ve got full guides for what’s coming up throughout the month, and we just published our top movie and TV picks for the month in the links provided.

What to Watch on Netflix This Weekend

The Life List (2025)

Rating: PG-13
Language: English
Genre: Comedy, Drama, Romance
Director: Adam Brooks
Cast: Sofia Carson, Kyle Allen, Sebastian De Souza
Writer: Adam Brooks, Lori Nelson Spielman
Runtime: 123 min

Sofia Carson is a Netflix superstar. Having now appeared in four big Netflix movies (one of which took a recent spot as the second most watched movie of all time), we’ll likely keep seeing the star on the streamer for years to come. In this film, she returns to the rom-com format with the actress playing the role of Alex, who is sent on a quest by her mother to complete her childhood bucket list.

We haven’t published our review for the flick just yet, but scanning through those who have published so far, it’s a bit of a mixed bag. Callie Hanna for FandomWire ultimately preferred the film as a mother/daughter drama over the rom-com elements, while Next Best Picture said, “With little flair, flat characters, and a script that pretty much writes itself, it’s another unmemorable Netflix film that joins the abyss of forgotten-about movies on the streaming platform.”

Talk to Me (2022)

Rating: R
Language: English
Genre: Horror, Thriller
Director: Danny Philippou, Michael Philippou
Cast: Ari McCarthy, Hamish Phillips, Kit Erhart-Bruce
Writer: Danny Philippou, Bill Hinzman, Daley Pearson
Runtime: 95 min / 1h 35m

When it comes to horrors, you can rarely have it both ways in pleasing both audiences and critics. In fact, most end up failing at both, so it was surprising that the R-rated Australian-produced horror from A24 picked up glowing reviews from basically everyone who opted to see it in theaters a few years back.

Arriving on Netflix US for the first time today, the movie sees friends interact with an option they should’ve steered well clear of. It allows them to communicate with the dead, but over time, it also serves as a portal for the dead to come to Earth. It’s beautifully made, high on my scaremeter, and Sophie Wilde is an absolute triumph. There’s a reason why A24 has the reputation it does – it’s films like this.

Survival of the Thickest (Season 2)

Number of episodes: 8
Rating: TV-MA
Language: English
Genre: Comedy
Cast: Michelle Buteau, Tone Bell, Marouane Zotti
Writer: Michelle Buteau

Sticking with A24 (although this comes from their TV department and is exclusive to Netflix), we move on to the return of Michelle Buteau in the comedy series. She plays the role of Mavis Beaumont, who has been on a journey of self-discovery after being newly single and continuing her career as a stylist. That journey continues with season 2, and reviews for the show continue to be glowing.

Caught (Limited Series)

Number of episodes: 6
Rating: TV-MA
Language: Spanish
Genre: Crime, Thriller
Director: Miguel Cohan, Hernán Goldfrid
Cast: Soledad Villamil, Alberto Ammann, Juan Minujín, Matías Recalt, Carmela Rivero, Fernán Mirás

You’ve had a busy month if you’re a fan of Harlan Coben on Netflix! The Polish adaptation Just One Look debuted earlier in the month and has made a modest impact on the Netflix charts thus far. Now it’s the turn of Caught, Netflix’s first Latin American adaptation of Coben’s works, to release and I personally believe this is the best non-English adaptation to date. Coming out of Argentina, the plot follows a reporter who is stopping at literally nothing to bring a child predator to justice, but ends up going down a deeper, darker rabbit hole.

People like their new movies! This week, Gerard Butler and O’Shea Jackson Jr. are taking a full sweep of points in the sequel to Den of Thieves (our highlight from last week’s new releases), which only recently ended its run in the Netflix top 10s. Elsewhere, The Electric State drops to sixth place and is rapidly falling.

  1. Den of Thieves 2: Pantera (80 points)
  2. The Twister: Caught in the Storm (70 points)

  4. Kraven the Hunter (59 points)
  5. Trap (46 points)
  6. The Electric State (41 points)
  7. Plankton: The Movie (26 points)
  8. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (16 points)

Adolescence Is A Certified Netflix Hit

Last week, I predicted that Adolescence may lose some steam and drop down in the charts – I was wrong! Still dominating worldwide, including the US, the slick British production managed to keep Shonda Rhimes at bay with her series The Residence coming in second. Running Point should also get a nod, given that it’s still sticking around nearly a month after launching, justifying its rapid season 2 renewal order.

  1. Adolescence (79 points)
  2. The Residence (71 points)
  3. Temptation Island (48 points)
  4. Running Point (36 points)
  5. Wolf King (26 points)
  6. WWE Raw (19 points)
  7. The Walking Dead: Dead City (18 points)
  8. Zero Day (17 points)
  9. Million Dollar Secret (15 points)
  10. Caught (15 points)
  11. Weak Hero Class 1 (12 points)
  12. American Murder: Gabby Petito (8 points)
  13. Gold & Greed: The Hunt for Fenn’s Treasure (6 points)
  14. Beauty in Black (5 points)
  15. Survival of the Thickest (5 points)

That’s it for this week!
