3 Best New Movies and Series Added to Netflix for February 1st, 2024

Looper (2012)

Rating: R
Language: English
Genre: Action, Drama, Sci-Fi
Director: Rian Johnson
Cast: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis, Emily Blunt
Writer: Rian Johnson
Runtime: 119 min / 1h 59m

Returning to the Netflix catalog today is Rian Johnson’s best film (in my opinion), Looper. Starring Gordon-Levitt and Willis, the sci-fi movie is about a time-traveling hitman who is given a job to assassinate himself.

Perfectly paced, and some stunning performances make it clear why this movie holds such high scores across the board.

As with a few of the movies on this list, you’ll need a premium Netflix membership to watch this movie because, as with most Sony movies, they’re unavailable to stream on the ad tier.

Shortcomings (2023)

Rating: R
Language: English
Genre: Comedy, Drama, Romance
Director: Randall Park
Cast: Justin H. Min, Sherry Cola, Ally Maki
Writer: Adrian Tomine
Runtime: 92 min / 1h 32m

If you’re looking for a relatively new movie today, then we’d recommend giving a shot to Sony Pictures Classics’ new title, Shortcomings, which had a small theatrical run back in August and arrives on Netflix today as an SVOD debut.

Here’s what you can expect from the new movie:

“A cynical indie movie theater manager must examine his life choices when his girlfriend forces a plot twist in their shaky relationship.”

Featuring Justin H. Min (who you’ll recognize from Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy)

Mary and The Witch’s Flower (2017)

Rating: PG
Language: Japanese
Genre: Animation, Adventure, Family
Director: Hiromasa Yonebayashi
Cast: Hana Sugisaki, Ryunosuke Kamiki, Yûki Amami
Writer: Mary Stewart, Riko Sakaguchi, Hiromasa Yonebayashi
Runtime: 103 min / 1h 43m

If you missed it, Netflix is about to be the home for future Studio Ponoc movies, starting with The Imaginary later in 2024. If you’re unfamiliar with the anime studio, Netflix has you covered today with the release of their beloved 2017 entry Mary and The Witch’s Flower.

If you’re looking for a Studio Ponoc one-two punch, Netflix also has the 2018 60-minute short film collection Modest Heroes: Ponoc Short Films Theatre.
