Velvet Buzzsaw Netflix Original
Arriving January 1st
Jake Gyllenhaal stars in this new Netflix Original brought to you by the team that gave us everyone’s favorite recent creepy film Nightcrawler. Definitely in his element, Gyllenhalls stars as an art critic sucked into the supernatural when paintings by an unknown artist are discovered and they begin to enact revenge on those who have allowed their greed to get in the way of art. It’s a little campy, a little scary, and super fun.
High Flying Bird Netflix Original
Arriving January 8th
Directed by Steven Soderbergh, this sports drama gets into the politics behind big games. From a screenplay developed by Oscar winner Tarell Alvin McCraney (Moonlight), this film follows the story of a sports agent who pitches a controversial business opportunity to a rookie basketball player during a lockout. This look at the 2011 labor dispute between NBA management and players isn’t really about basketball at all but about the game that goes on behind the scenes.
The Breaker Upperers Netflix Original Movie
Arriving February 15th
This New Zealand comedy centers around two cynical women who create an agency that helps break up couples in an attempt to avoid moving on with their lives. It contains a lot of understated dry wit and of bawdy comedy. Two things you can never have enough of in my opinion. The wonderful chemistry of the main duo is quite wonderful and really carries the film.
Paddleton Netflix Original
Arriving February 22nd
It’s no secret I’m a huge Mark Duplass fan so I was prepared to like this film from the start. Duplass and Ray Romano (who I’m also a big fan of) are two neighbors who become bound in an unlikely, yet unbreakable, friendship. After receiving news that one of them is dying, they embark on an unlikely road trip. Dealing with a subject matter that is most usually dour, they manage to bring levity to a predicament it that is enjoyable, humorous, and very relatable.
Jaws
Arriving February 1st
This Stephen Speilberg classic couldn’t be left off of the list. When a string of shark fatalities occur near the New England tourist town of Amity Island, police chief Martin Brody wants to close the beaches, but the mayor overrules him, fearing that the loss of tourist revenue will cripple the economy. An expert and grizzled ship captain offer to help Brody capture the killer beast, and the trio engages in an epic battle of man vs. nature.
For good measure, the sequels Jaws 2 (1978), Jaws 3 (1983), and Jaws: The Revenge (1987) have also been added.
What else should you be on the lookout for today?
The first of the month brings a drop of older classic titles. I would recommend checking out:
- Pretty In Pink
- About a Boy
- As Good As It Gets
- Billy Elliot
