What To Watch After Watching Ripley On Netflix

Netflix’s splashy new limited series Ripley is on Netflix and as the label on the season suggests, we won’t be getting a second season. Are you looking for something to watch next, though? We’ve got some suggestions.

Just in case you need a quick catch-up, Ripley is the latest adaptation of the classic book by Patricia Highsmith. The plot of the 8-episode miniseries originally in development at Showtime is about a grifter who’s been hired for a new job in New York City during the 1960s.

The chances are you already know the series is pretty good given that you’re a) here and b) it’s gained the coveted Certified Fresh ranking on RottenTomatoes with an 85% ranking.

Now, the obvious choice for what to watch next would be to revisit the 1999 adaptation, The Talented Mr. Ripley, which starred Matt Damon and Philip Seymour Hoffman. According to Unogs, over 30 Netflix countries are streaming that classic title, including the UK and Australia.

The Irishman

As if you needed an excuse to watch (or rewatch for the fifth time) Martin Scorsese’s signature Netflix movie, The Irishman, you may not know that it was adapted from a book and that Steven Zallian wrote the screenplay.

Ripley and The Irishman have a few overlaps in that they adapt books although with vastly different subjects. You can read more about Zaillian’s insights into writing that screenplay in this excellent LA Times article.

Most of Zaillian’s previous works are also worth watching, and you can probably find many on and off of Netflix, as they’re licensed quite regularly to streamers worldwide. Other well-known titles Zaillian has written or directed (or both) include The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Moneyball, Searching for Bobby Fisher, and the 2016 series The Night Of.

If You Need More Andrew Scott

Sadly, Netflix isn’t home to Scott’s most widely known titles. His Dark Materials is locked to HBO, and The Pursuit of Love and Fleagbag are locked to Prime Video.

With that said, Scott did take center stage in Netflix’s flagship anthology drama series Black Mirror. He appeared in the shortened fifth season of the show in episode 2, Smithereens. In that episode, which was the highest rated on IMDb of the season, Scott plays Chris Gillhaney, a London rideshare driver who kidnaps a worker from a social media company.

Netflix has another project coming up, with Andrew Scott involved, too. Scott is due to star alongside Jamie Foxx, Cameron Diaz, Kyler Chandler, and Glenn Close in the new action-comedy movie titled Back in Action, which is confirmed for release later in 2024.

If You’re In The Mood for More Black and White on Netflix

If you’re down with the black-and-white aesthetic featured throughout Ripley, then you may be looking for Netflix’s other collection of black-and-white titles. Netflix’s most prominent black-and-white films include:

  • El Conde
  • Roma
  • Elisa & Marcela
  • The Forty-Year-Old Version
  • What Did Jack Do?
  • Stutz
  • Sr.
  • Maestro

However, the one we think is closest aligned to Ripley is Mank. Courted for a slew of Oscar nominations, this movie featured some top acting chops and was also a period piece albeit set 30 years prior to Ripley. Directed by David Fincher, the movie followed screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz who was writing Citizen Kane.

Conmen Documentary Recommendations

There are plenty of documentaries exploring modern-day conmen, whether recent cryptocurrency documentaries like Trust No One: The Hunt for Crypto King or Bitconned. Plus, you’ve got other well-known documentaries like The Tinder Swindler and The Puppet Master: Hunting The Ultimate Conman.

The Masked Scammer was a compelling watch, as was every season of the series, Dirty Money, which exposed numerous fraudsters.
