Best Video Game Adaptations On Netflix

Pictures via Netflix

Video game adaptations are pretty huge nowadays. Look no further than the whacky A Minecraft Movie or The Last of Us cinematic adaptation currently dominating on HBO. Netflix has a fair share of great series based on video games in its roster.

From the wildly popular League of Legends series Arcane to the more recent Devil May Cry — Netflix has plenty of series based on iconic video games. In this list, we count down 10 of the very best Netflix Original video game adaptations you can stream in 2025. Let’s jump in!

Resident Evil

  • Genre: Action, Horror, Sci-Fi
  • Rating: TV-MA
  • Release Date: July 14, 2022
  • Cast: Ella Balinska, Tamara Smart, Siena Agudong, Adeline Rudolph, Lance Reddick, Paola Núñez

  • Runtime: 60 mins

Back when it released in 2022, Netflix marketed the hell out of its Resident Evil show. Based on the iconic video game franchise, Resident Evil had a lot going for it.  The series takes place a few years after the viral outbreak, following badass survivor Jade Wesker (Ella Balinska), who explores her family ties to the all-powerful Umbrella Corporation — and learns of its connections to the virus outbreak.

Ultimately, Resident Evil was axed after just one season. This came as no real surprise; the series was very expensive to produce, and poor reviews meant it couldn’t gain much traction. That said, the show had its fair share of fans. If you want some fun, blood-soaked, zombie-killing chaos, you might get something out of it.

This isn’t the only time Netflix has forayed into the Resident Evil franchise. The streamer also released Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness in 2021.

Sonic Prime

  • Release Date: January 11, 2024
  • Cast: Deven Christian Mack, Ashleigh Ball, Vincent Tong
  • Language: English
  • Runtime: 43 mins

While more kids focused, any fan of Sonic the Hedgehog will find enjoyment in Sonic Prime. The series pits Sonic (Deven Christian Mack) in a story set in the midst of multiversal chaos — known in the show as the Shatterverse. It brings together the iconic team of Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and co, as they sweep dimensions to stop archenemy Dr. Eggman from destroying the fabric of the multiverse.

This family friendly series is a whole lot of fun. While it takes some liberties from the original games, it remains reasonably faithful to the core elements of Sonic the Hedgehog. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like the series will return for a fourth season, although there are rumors that there’s another iteration in the world and the studio behind the show is working on Netflix’s upcoming Minecraft series.

Dragon Age: Absolution

  • Release Date: December 9, 2022
  • Cast: Kimberly Brooks, Matthew Mercer, Phil LaMarr, Ashly Burch, Sumalee Montano, Keston John
  • Language: English

BioWare’s award-winning Dragon Age video game franchise is among the most enduring fantasy series in history. The epic, open-world games are treasure-troves of story. It’s no real surprise that the franchise also has a history in the realm of animated series and movies, most notably Dragon Age: Dawn of the Seeker

In 2022, Netflix debuted a Dragon Age series, subtitled Absolution. The animated series received largely positive reviews from critics; it currently holds 92% on Rotten Tomatoes. Vehemently faithful to the beloved Dragon Age games, the show follows a ragtag team of misfits who set out on the ultimate heist: to steal the blood magic infused artefact, the Circulum Infinitus.

If you’re a Dragon Age fan, Absolution is simply a must-watch. That said, if you’re not familiar with the games, this series may well be lost on you.

7

Tomb Raider

  • Rating: TV-14
  • Release Date: October 11, 2024
  • Cast: Hayley Atwell, Richard Armitage, Zoe Boyle
  • Language: English

Synonymous with action and adventure, Lara Croft is one of the most iconic video game characters of all time. Over the years, the Tomb Raider franchise has made its way to film and television with varying results. Perhaps Angelina Jolie’s cult 2001 movie Lara Croft: Tomb Raider is most notable. Or if we’re looking slightly more recent, there’s the 2018 movie starring Alicia Vikander in the titular role.

Naturally, Netflix has tried its hand at a Tomb Raider series in the form of Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft (2024). The attempt was not the worst Tomb Raider adaptation, nor the best. It pleased through its flawless animation and excellent voice work from Hayley Atwell. However, some of the creative decisions didn’t sit too well with fans of the original games. That said, it will officially return for another season, after receiving a two-season order at the streamer.

The Cuphead Show!

Chock full of slapstick, goofy comedy and whimsical out-of-this-world adventures, The Cuphead Show! takes everything about the classic run-and-gun game and translates it brilliantly into the television medium. It effortlessly retains the classic cartoon style and signature humour. Seeing an indie game get this sort of treatment is extremely satisfying.

At 3 seasons, each with short episodes, The Cuphead Show! is the ultimate binge. Whether you want a taste of nostalgia, a good laugh, or a bit of both, this is the show for you!

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners

We follow David (Zach Aguilar), a street kid struggling to survive in Night City — the technologically amplified city of the future where the game and series take place. In a bid to stay alive, David opts to become a mercenary outlaw, known as an edgerunner.

You don’t have to play the game in order to understand Edgerunners. The series is a brilliant standalone watch. However, if you’ve experienced the game, you’ll begin to notice all sorts of connections and easter eggs!

The series was created by Adi Shankar (Dredd, The Guardians of Justice), who sees it as part of his larger “Bootleg Multiverse” alongside Netflix’s other series Castlevania and Castlevania: Nocturne. After a hugely popular debut season, Netflix has already renewed the series for season 2!

But Belmont is not alone, being joined by a band of misfits on his perilous journey.

Castlevania ended with its fourth season in 2021. But fear not, Netflix has a brilliant ongoing spinoff, Castlevania: Nocturne, set during the French Revolution around 300 years after the original series. Castlevania: Nocturne season 2 aired earlier this year to fantastic reviews!

Okay, technically we’re cheating with this pick. We are absolutely aware that The Witcher began as a series of novels by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. The Witcher went from being a popular novel series to becoming a global phenomenon thanks to video games, and you can totally see the influence infused within Netflix’s live-action Witcher series.

The Witcher follows Geralt of Rivia, a monster hunter, who navigates a magical, war-filled world. The series is a dark fantasy with incredibly rich lore, breathtaking action sequences, and so much more. Over the years, The Witcher has become one of Netflix’s most popular series; it will return for its fourth season later this year.

Currently standing at a perfect 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, Arcane is one of the top-rated shows on Netflix. What’s more, Arcane can be watched as a standalone. There are so many fans who have never played League of Legends — although playing League will undoubtedly enhance your viewing experience.
