In this list, we walk you through 10 of the finest fantasy series and movies streaming on Netflix in 2025. Whether you’re looking for something dark and gritty or simply some fun escapism, we have something for you.
Ever since Game of Thrones became a global phenomenon, streamers across the board have been vying to attain the next big epic fantasy. Over the years, Netflix has seen numerous attempts, ranging from The Witcher to a darker, more mature live-action remake of beloved cartoon Avatar: The Last Airbender. Let’s take a look at 10 terrific epic fantasy shows and movies currently streaming on Netflix.
The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance

- Genre: Action, Adventure, Drama, Family, Fantasy, Horror, Mystery, Sci-Fi
- Rating: TV-PG
- Release Date: August 30, 2019
- Cast: Awkwafina, Caitriona Balfe, Helena Bonham Carter, Warrick Brownlow-Pike
- Language: English
- Runtime: 60 min
Like myself, there’s droves of Netflix subscribers who will never forgive the streamer for cancelling The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance after 1 season. Age of Resistance acts as a prequel to Jim Henson’s seminal ’80s movie The Dark Crystal, exploring the origins of the world of Thra through three young Gelflings.
The series boasted an all-star cast. We’re talking Mark Hamill, Anna Taylor-Joy, Taron Egerton, Simon Pegg, Awkwafina, Lena Headey, and Nathalie Emmanuel. Netflix shows don’t get much more stacked than that. What’s more, it even won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Children’s Program. Despite all of this, Netflix ultimately decided to axe the show after one season. Yes, we’re still bitter about it. Even so, don’t let the cancellation put you off from what is an outstanding, spectacular season of television that’s a love letter to fans of the original.
Blood of Zeus

- Genre: Animation, Action, Adventure

Based on Greek mythology, Blood of Zeus follows Heron, a young, common man who unwittingly discovers that he’s the illegitimate son of Zeus. Following the revelation, he’s plunged into a world of chaos, tasked with saving heaven and earth admit interference from other godly forces.
Blood of Zeus is one of Netflix’s top-rated shows. Look no further than its flawless 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The final season of Blood of Zeus premieres on May 8th, 2025. You can check out the trailer here:
Cursed

- Genre: Adventure, Drama, Fantasy
- Rating: TV-MA
- Release Date: July 17, 2020
- Cast: Katherine Langford, Sebastian Armesto, Shalom Brune-Franklin, Emily Coates
- Language: English
Gritty and filled with magic, Cursed sets the scene within Arthurian legend. It tells the legend from the unique perspective of outcast sorceress Nimue (Katherine Langford), the Lady of the Lake, who teams up with Arthur (Devon Terrell) himself. There’s a lot to love about Cursed, not least that it manages to tell a well-chronicled legend in a way that feels novel and fresh.
The series only has one season. It was cut short way before its time at Netflix, which is why it can’t rank any higher.
Damsel

- Genre: Action, Adventure, Fantasy
- Rating: PG-13
- Release Date: March 8, 2024
- Director: Juan Carlos Fresnadillo
- Cast: Millie Bobby Brown, Ray Winstone, Angela Bassett
- Language: English
- Runtime: 108 min
Millie Bobby Brown shines as Elodie, a young girl who marries a handsome prince… only to quickly learn that the entire marriage was a trap. Before long, she’s plunged into a cave, where there lurks a dragon out to get her. What follows is a fight for survival as Elodie battles one of the genre’s greatest foes.
The film is a mixed bag. Sure, the plot is a bit hollow. It sets up a simple premise, offering plenty of fantastic action sequences and an exceptional performance from Millie Bobby Brown. In terms of ratings, it wasn’t quite so impressive. The movie currently boasts a meagre 56% on IMDb, which is probably a little harsh. Damsel was most-watched Netflix film for the first half of 2024
Shadow & Bone

- Genre: Action, Adventure, Drama
- Rating: TV-14
- Release Date: March 16, 2023
- Cast: Jessie Mei Li, Ben Barnes, Archie Renaux
- Language: English
- Runtime: 54 mins
Based on the beloved novels by Leigh Bardugo, there’s a lot to love about Shadow & Bone. The series takes place in an intricately crafted world (inspired by early 19th-century Russia) with layered characters. It’s chock-full of romance, political intrigue, dark magic, and war. We follow orphan Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li), who discovers a powerful magical ability that could unite her war-torn world. The series stars Ben Barnes as General Aleksander Kirigan.
Netflix sadly cancelled the show after two seasons, most likely due to low viewership numbers. The SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes of 2023 probably didn’t help its cause, either. It’s one of the rare TV shows that had me checking out the books right after viewing.
Avatar: The Last Airbender

- Genre: Action, Adventure, Comedy
- Rating: TV-14
- Release Date: February 22, 2024
- Cast: Gordon Cormier, Kiawentiio, Ian Ousley
- Language: English
- Runtime: 64 mins
Is Netflix’s live-action remake of Nickelodeon’s beloved Avatar: The Last Airbender a good adaptation? The short answer is no. The live-action remake condenses the plot massively, merging storylines and altogether dropping others. It takes on a significantly darker and grittier tone, attempting to appeal to a wider audience, and fans of the original who are now grown up.
So why are we including it? Well, Netflix’s Avatar is mostly a good show. It’s hard to forgive some of the creative decisions, but as a standalone fantasy series it’s a whole lot of action-packed fun. With large set pieces, breathtaking visuals, and intense battles, the series feels grand and epic from the outset. As a result of enormous viewership of its debut season, Netflix has already renewed Avatar right the way through to its conclusion. I have my reservations, but I’ll absolutely continue watching and enjoying it.
One Piece

- Genre: Animation, Action, Adventure
- Rating: TV-14
- Release Date: April 12, 2025
- Cast: Mayumi Tanaka, Akemi Okamura, Laurent Vernin
- Language: Japanese
- Runtime: 24 min
When a live-action adaptation of One Piece was first announced, there was a whole lot of apprehension surrounding it. Would it really be possible to remake one of the most beloved anime shows in live-action and do it justice? Well, claiming Netflix’s version to be close to the original is a bit of a stretch, but it’s pretty fantastic regardless.
The first major plus for One Piece was the news that the show’s original creator, Eiichiro Oda, was heavily involved in the production. It takes the plot and puts several spins on it to condense and allow the story to be told through a live-action medium, but it retains (and embraces) the whimsical nature of the anime.
The casting for the show was absolutely on point, too. Iñaki Godoy is phenomenal as Monkey D. Luffy. We can’t wait for season 2 and beyond!
Arcane

- Genre: Animation, Action, Adventure
- Rating: TV-14
- Release Date: November 9, 2024
- Cast: Hailee Steinfeld, Kevin Alejandro, Jason Spisak
- Language: English
- Runtime: 44 mins
Set in the wildly popular world of League of Legends, Arcane follows sisters Violet (Hailee Steinfeld) and Jinx (Ella Purnell), who find themselves on opposite ends of a brewing war. The series follows them as they navigate the utopian Piltover and the oppressed undercity of Zaun.
Currently standing at a perfect 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, Arcane is one of the top-rated fantasy shows on Netflix. Arcane can be watched as a standalone, so you don’t need to worry about having prior knowledge of the games. There’s a whole legion of devoted fans who have never played League of Legends — although playing it will undoubtedly enhance your viewing experience.
There have been rumors for a while that a follow-up series is on the way, and fingers crossed, Netflix picks that up.
The Sandman

- Genre: Drama, Fantasy, Horror
- Rating: TV-MA
- Release Date: August 19, 2022
- Cast: Tom Sturridge, Boyd Holbrook, Patton Oswalt
- Language: English
Based on the beloved series of DC Comics (which are widely regarded as some of the best comics ever), Netflix’s The Sandman is an epic fantasy series like no other out there. The series follows Dream of the Endless (Tom Sturridge), the personification of dreams, as he goes about his duties as the ruler of the realm we visit when we fall asleep at night.
The Sandman is so much more than what you might think. It encompasses all sorts of genres, from drama to fantasy, horror, and historical fiction. It’s got a bit of everything, and it spins together its unique narrative seamlessly. Moreover, the series will return for its second and final season on July 4. You can learn more about The Sandman season 2 here.
The Sandman also has a brilliant spinoff project, Dead Boy Detectives, streaming on Netflix. The spinoff was sadly axed after one season, but don’t let that put you off; it’s a fantastic series.
The Witcher

- Genre: Action, Adventure, Drama
- Rating: TV-MA
- Release Date: July 27, 2023
- Director: Tomek Baginski
- Cast: Henry Cavill, Freya Allan, Anya Chalotra
- Language: English
- Runtime: 60 min
When we talk about epic fantasy, there’s one franchise that stands as one of the biggest genre properties out there. Yes, we’re talking about The Witcher. Originally a series of novels by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, the series became a global phenomenon thanks to the video games. And when Netflix decided to adapt the series for television in 2019, it was an instant success, and it’s still going strong(ish) today with season 4 due out in late 2025.
The Witcher follows Geralt of Rivia, a monster hunter, who navigates a magical, war-filled world. The series is a dark fantasy with incredibly rich lore, breathtaking action sequences, and so much more. Over the years, The Witcher has become one of Netflix’s most popular series; it will return for its fourth season later this year. Of course, with Henry Cavill departing the role, Geralt will now be played by Liam Hemsworth.
