It’s the end of an era, at least the end of the first Disney trilogy in the Star Wars franchise. Episode 9, The Rise of Skywalker, is now in cinemas and if you’re wondering when it’ll be on Netflix, you’re going to be disappointed. Here’s the streaming schedule for Star Wars: Episode 9 and why it won’t be on Netflix.
As we mentioned, Episode 9 is set to be the final installment of Disney’s first movie trilogy in the Star Wars universe. Disney’s handling of the Star Wars franchise has been widely well-received with The Mandalorian and the spinoff movies all being widely received. The main trilogy they’re working on that takes place after the events of Episode 6 are widely debated, however.
With that said, the ninth movie is now here and directed by J.J. Abrams who directed episode 7. It’s the final chapter that hopefully answers some of our biggest questions left over after The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi.
With previous entries in the Star Wars franchise being on Netflix, let’s now take a look if episode 9 is set to join them.
Will The Rise of Skywalker be on Netflix in the United States or Canada?
Sadly, this will be the first Star Wars movie since Rogue One that will not be coming to Netflix. All of the Star Wars movies released between 2016 and 2019 were covered by the output deal Netflix had with Disney. However, with Disney coming into the streaming market with their own title, they decided not to renew its contract with Netflix.
It didn’t see the immediate withdrawal of the current Star Wars movies, however. Episode 8 is still available on Netflix until the end of December 2019 and Solo is set to leave Netflix in 2020.
That means every Star Wars title beyond 2019 will release on the newly released Disney+ instead.
Will Star Wars Episode 9 be on Netflix in other regions?
Unfortunately not. Despite Disney+ not being available globally, they’ve not renewed their Netflix contract with any region in the world. That means even countries like the United Kingdom, that did eventually get new Disney releases won’t be seeing Episode 9 come to Netflix.
When will The Rise of Skywalker be on Disney+?
Star Wars Episode 9 will be on Disney+ in a similar manner to how it used to come to Netflix. That means roughly an 8-9 month wait but we do know that Disney is sometimes willing to break its own rules when it comes to first window release. For example, Avengers: Endgame released a month before it was supposed to and The Lion King is set to join Disney+ 193 days after its release.
Our friends over at What’s on Disney Plus predicts you’ll be able to stream The Rise of Skywalker between June and August 2020.
