If anyone had the question “what if Clark Kent was evil?” then Brightburn will be answering that for you. The origin story many have wanted to see, Brightburn has the fresh take on the horror genre. But will the superhero-horror title be coming to Netflix? Let’s find out.
Brightburn is a superhero-horror film written by Brian and Mark Gunn. Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn served as the executive producer of Brightburn while David Yarovesky (The Hive) directed. Brightburn flips the superhero origin story by adding horror to the genre. Asking the question “what if the hero was evil?” Brightburn is undoubtedly one of the most intriguing films of 2019.
Tori and Kyle Breyer while at home on their farm witness a spaceship crashland. Upon finding the ship, they find a baby boy inside. Having struggled to conceive a child themselves they adopt the boy and name him Brandon. 12 years later and Brandon begins to discover he has strange powers, granting him immense strength, invulnerability and the gift of flight. With these powers, Brandon has the tools needed to become a great hero. But absolute power corrupts absolutely and as Brandon’s powers manifest so does his violent tendencies.
Will Brightburn be coming to Netflix US?
Until 2021 Sony Pictures will continue to release their latest films on STARZ who have had a contract in place since 2013. This only includes ‘first run’ which means once the license expires at STARZ Brightburn will be available to the highest bidder.
The only agreement that Netflix and Sony have in place is for animated titles produced by the latter. The Japanese giants have stated recently that they want to ship future releases to streaming services on a title by title basis.
Netflix does have billions behind it, but so do many other streaming services. Whether or not Netflix gets Brightburn depends on how large the demand for the film is.
Will Brightburn stream in other regions?
In the United Kingdom subscribers will likely have to wait a long time for the arrival of Brightburn. Typically films arrive on Now TV and Sky before they are available to stream elsewhere.
Brightburn will have its streaming debut towards the end of 2019 or early 2020. The horror will be available to stream for a limited but significant amount of time before leaving. Netflix UK may have to wait until late 2021 or Early 2022 for Brightburn.
Netflix Canada tends to follow the US Netflix, so if Netflix US receives Brightburn expect it to arrive on Netflix Canada too.
As for Australia if Netflix doesn’t receive the title then Amazon Prime or Foxtel are the streaming services to check.
