CHICKEN JOCKEY! The theatrical event of 2025 is here. Jack Black plays Steve in this adaptation of the popular video game Minecraft. Since Netflix has picked up quite a few Warner Bros. Pictures movies in the past couple of years and they have a connection to Minecraft in another way, you may be wondering whether the movie will be streaming on Netflix once it’s finished its theatrical release… Let’s take a look.
Directed by Jared Hess, with a screenplay by Chris Bowman and Hubbel Palmer, A Minecraft Movie is based on the popular video game by Mojang Studios. The film stars Jason Momoa as Garrett ‘The Garbage Man’ Garrison, a former video game champion whose mundane life is disrupted when he and three others are transported into the blocky Overworld. There, they must master the terrain and embark on a quest with the expert crafter Steve (Jack Black) to find their way home.
It’s scored mixed reviews thus far, with critics at least, although we suspect there’s a case of Gentleminions happening with this film, and it could be a major blockbuster and box office driver for the year.
Why A Minecraft Movie May Come to Netflix US Later in 2025 (But It’s Not Guaranteed…)
Over the past two years, Netflix has managed to pick up the streaming licenses to some of Warner Bros. Pictures’ biggest theatrical releases. Typically, they’ve come to Netflix around Christmas time, although in the recent case of Trap, that was slightly after. Last year, Netflix picked up Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Dune: Part Two, The Watchers, and Horizon Part 1. Netflix isn’t doing this under any announced deal and is sharing the first-window rights with Max.
All that is to say, Max is the only guaranteed place in the US to watch A Minecraft Movie on streaming. For the most part, new movies arrive on PVOD about a month and a half after release before hitting Max 3-4 months after that initial release. If Netflix picks it up, it won’t be until much later in 2025, if at all.
What about Netflix Internationally?
Netflix Australia and Japan pick up new WB Pictures movies in a timely fashion (typically around nine months after the initial release), which would place them sometime in December ’25 or January ’26. In select European territories and Canada, you typically have to wait between 12 and 24 months for new movies to drop (a release sometime in 2026-2027). In the UK, you usually have to wait around 3 years following their runs on Now and Prime Video. For example, you just got Don’t Worry Darling, which was first released in September 2022.
Is Netflix still making a Minecraft series?
Netflix has had a couple of connections to Minecraft in its history. For a period, Minecraft: Story Mode, a special edition of the Telltale Game, resided on the streamer, taking advantage of the interactive features. That, sadly, departed Netflix back in December 2022.
Last year, though, Netflix confirmed it was working on a brand new series to coincide with the 15th anniversary of the game’s launch. A year later, however, details remain slim on the new series, although we do know that WildBrain, the same team behind Sonic Prime, is working on the show. Beyond that, Netflix only said, “The series will feature an original story with new characters, showing the world of Minecraft in a new light.”
