2024 has been a heavy year for Netflix Original Indian films so far. After the social issue drama Bhakshak, the murder mystery Murder Mubarak, and the somber biographical dramas Amar Singh Chamkila and Maharaj, Netflix switches gears with the out-and-out comedy Wild Wild Punjab.
Wild Wild Punjab was first announced at the Next on Netflix India event in late February. The buddy road-trip movie comes from production house Luv Films, whose founder Luv Ranjan hit it big directing the romantic comedy Pyaar Ka Punchnama and its sequel. Several Luv Films titles — thrillers Kuttey and Vadh and romantic comedies Jai Mummy Di and Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar — are currently streaming on Netflix, though Wild Wild Punjab is the first Netflix Original Film from the production house.
TV director Simarpreet Singh makes his feature directorial debut with Wild Wild Punjab. Ranjan created the story, and Harman Wadala and Sandeep Jain wrote the screenplay.
What is the plot of Wild Wild Punjab?
Here’s how Netflix describes the film’s plot:
“A heartbroken Rajesh Khanna, a.k.a. Khanne (Varun Sharma), is determined to confront his ex at her wedding in front of her family, notwithstanding the groom or the baraatis (wedding procession), to say four magical words: “I am over you!” Egging him on and up for some fun, his motley crew of friends — Maan Arora a.k.a Arore (Sunny Singh), Gaurav Jain a.k.a Jainu (Jassie Gill), and Mr. Honey Singh a.k.a Honey Paaji (Manjot Singh) — come up with a plan. They embark on the ultimate break-up road trip where more things go wild than right. Radha (Patralekhaa) and Meera (Ishita Raj) join them on this adventure across the vibrant yet chaotic world of Punjab to help Khanne find closure. This wild wild journey turns out to be anything but ordinary. But the question is, will they succeed?”
Who is cast in Wild Wild Punjab?
Varun Sharma — who plays the heartbroken Khanne — is a buddy comedy veteran. He starred in all three films in the Fukrey franchise alongside Manjot Singh, who plays his friend once again in Wild Wild Punjab.
One of the other pals is played by Sunny Singh, a staple in Luv Ranjan’s films. Singh has appeared in three of the five movies Ranjan directed and in two more titles produced by Luv Films. Fellow Ranjan veteran Ishita Raj and three-time Singh co-star joins the fun as well.
The last of the buddies is played by singer and actor Jassie Gill. Patralekhaa — one of the stars of the upcoming Netflix thriller series IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack — rounds out the main cast.
What’s the release date of Wild Wild Punjab?
