Netflix’s acquisition of some of South Korea’s biggest shows has done the streaming service well in recent years. Arthdal Chronicles is perhaps Netflix’s biggest acquisition to date but will there be a season 2 coming soon? Let’s take a look.
Season 1 of Arthdal Chronicles released on Netflix weekly from June 1st, 2019 around the world before wrapping up in November 2019.
The fantasy series is set in the mythical land of Arth and sees the birth of a new society in the ancient city of Arthdal. Among the key South Korean talent for the series includes Song Joong-ki, Jan Dong-gun, and Kim Ji-won.
First, let’s take you through the differences between the Netflix release and how it released in South Korea as that’s an important distinction to make.
Netflix carries season 1 of the series which contains 18 episodes. In South Korea, however, the 18 episodes are technically split across three seasons. So what we’re asking really is whether there’d be a fourth season of Arthdal Chronicles and when will it be on Netflix.
Should there be a season 2 of Arthdal Chronicles?
Despite some complaints regarding working conditions, the series was generally well-received in both South Korea and international regions via Netflix. The show has been one of the biggest budget shows in South Korea to date.
However, as of December 2019 the fate of the show is still unknown but there have been some reports of a renewal.
Many fans seemed to think the show could be the next Game of Thrones and there were considerable plot lines left unanswered at the end of season 1 (part 3).
In September 2019, it was reported that negotiations were ongoing in South Korea regarding the continuation of the series. Further statements put out by the production company has also led to speculation it’s not the end for Arthdal Chronicles.
In an interview, it was said (loosely translated):
“Season 2 is possible only with the support of the crew and the support of many viewers. We will review the various conditions and make the final decision as soon as possible, and the crew will do their best to do Season 2.”
But in an article, also published in September, it was reported the series had been renewed.
Should the series get renewed, we’d expect a similar release schedule again which means that it’d likely be a year or two down the line before Netflix is able to nab the new episodes.
If you love K-Dramas, Netflix is going to be a great streaming home for you over the next few years. Thanks to a huge lineup for 2020 and deals like the recent one struck with JTBC, there’s plenty too look forward to.
