Voltron: Legendary Defenders will conclude once its eighth season has released and won’t be coming back for more episodes in a season 9. Here’s why the show has concluded, a look back at the previous seasons and what else there is for fans of Voltron.
Let’s just recap as to how we got to the point where Netflix released 8 seasons in just over 2 years. The first season released back in June 2016 rebooting the classic children’s series of the 1980’s. Netflix and Dreamworks worked on the project together although Netflix wasn’t the sole distributor around the world.
Let’s take a look at the release schedule so far including when season 8 will be on Netflix. New seasons have come quick and fast to the service with regular drops coming every 4-6 months for the past 2 years. In total, there’ll have been 78 episodes added to Netflix.
Season | No. Episodes | Netflix Release |
---|---|---|
Season 1 | 13 | June 10, 2016 |
Season 2 | 13 | January 20, 2017 |
Season 3 | 7 | August 4, 2017 |
Season 4 | 6 | October 13, 2017 |
Season 5 | 6 | March 2, 2018 |
Season 6 | 7 | June 15, 2018 |
Season 7 | 13 | August 10, 2018 |
Season 8 | 13 | November 2018 |
Why won’t there be a season 9 of Voltron: Legendary Defenders?
The answer is really simple, the story will have wrapped up. The announcement of the eighth and final season occurred at SDCC 2018 where the cast and crew spoke to fans about the show.
Typically, Netflix orders multi-season orders from Dreamworks TV for its kid’s library. For example, Netflix only gave a 6 season order for the TV adaptation of the How to Train your Dragon franchise.
What about a spinoff?
Naturally, a spinoff could happen further down the line although there have been no rumours or evidence to suggest that’s the case at the moment.
What to watch next…
There are plenty of series and movies you should watch on Netflix. Some regions still have the old 1984 Voltron movie Defender of the Universe which released last March. Unfortunately, none of the old series are on Netflix including Voltron, Voltron: Fleet of Doom, Voltron: The Third Dimension and Voltron Force.
If you’re a fan of 80’s reboots then you’ll no doubt be excited for the upcoming She-Ra reboot coming to the service. Both She-Ra and the original He-Man are both on Netflix right now.
