Game of Thrones is a behemoth show and one that will likely never be toppled. That’s not to say that it can’t happen and Netflix is certainly going to try. Here are five upcoming shows that may give Netflix the crown.
Of course, Game of Thrones isn’t on Netflix and while there are some alternatives, nothing has come close to the scale of Game of Thrones.
While other services have one or two shows that are likely even able to get close to the like of Game of Thrones, Netflix has quite a few more.
Amazon is putting big bets on its Lord of the Rings series spending upwards of a billion dollars and at the moment, the headline show for Disney+ seems to be ‘The Mandalorian’ but it’s yet to be seen the scope of how well that show could perform.
The Last Kingdom
Game of Thrones has always been popular but most would argue that the show didn’t hit its stride until its later seasons. That’s somewhat similar to The Last Kingdom which has slowly been growing over the seasons. It’s quickly become one of our favorite historical dramas on Netflix replacing the now-canceled Marco Polo which was designed to be the Game of Thrones killer.
Season 4 is currently in production and expected to release later in 2019.
The Chronicles of Narnia Netflix Series & Movies
Big bets have been placed on the Narnia franchise for Netflix. The deal which was announced in late 2018 means that Netflix is producing both movies and TV series on the classic fantasy novel series.
Disney produced three movies for the franchise but Netflix has the advantage whereby it is producing content on all seven books, something not previously done.
Expect massive battle sequences which have made Game of Thrones famous and fantastic character development.
No news of when we’ll actually see The Chronicles of Narnia hit Netflix although it’s not likely to be until 2020 at the earliest.
The Witcher TV Series
Once again, this series is based on an incredibly popular novel series thanks largely in part to it being developed into video games. The Witcher on Netflix shares a similar genre to Game of Thrones and also has a massive budget for its series too.
The series is about Geralt of Rivia who is a monster hunter who also has special abilities. It’s got the potential thanks to a captive audience and some big-name stars involved such as Henry Cavill, Freya Allan, and Anya Chalotra.
The show is filming right now and has been pegged for a late 2019 release.
Avatar: The Last Airbender
Despite the live-action movie being a bit of a flop, the Nickelodeon animated series of Avatar: The Last Airbender remains incredibly popular to this day.
This series is likely going to be a bit lighter than Game of Thrones but features many of the fantasy elements that GoT features plus some fantastic character designs and action sequences.
The series is expected out sometime in 2020.
There are plenty of other fantasy series scheduled in the future but these are the biggest ones that are expected in the next couple of years.
What do you think? Are any of these enough to warrant Netflix taking the Game of Thrones throne away from HBO? Let us know down in the comments.
