Earlier this year, at Next on Netflix 2025, Netflix unveiled a first look at its new drama thriller, Straw, from Tyler Perry. Now, months later, we’re closing in on the release date, with the latest feature from the prolific creator scheduled to arrive on our Netflix accounts in June 2025. Here’s what you need to know.

We were among the first batch of outlets to announce the project back in June 2024, with the project already in production for over a week by the time we published. Netflix confirmed seven actors who were attached to the project, including:

  • Taraji P. Henson (The Color PurpleFight Night) as Janiyah Wiltkinson
  • Sherri Shepherd (Precious30 Rock)
  • Teyana Taylor (A Thousand and One)
  • Glynn Turman (RustinMa Rainey’s Black Bottom)
  • Rockmond Dunbar (Prison BreakSons of Anarchy)
  • Mike Merrill (The Black Hamptons)
  • Sinbad (AtlantaA Different World)

Since then, the cast has been rounded out with Derek Phillips (Friday Night Lights) as Agent Bryce, Justin James Boykin (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever) as Dan, Mike Merrill (All American) as Detective Grimes, Ashley Versher (Beauty in Black) as Tessa, Diva Tyler (Halloween Killers) as Isabella, Tarina Pouncy (Roman J. Israel) as Principal Matheson, Anthony E. Williams (The Equalizer) as Officer Dickson, Cheryl Frazier (Sacrifice) as Deloris, and Tilky Jones (The Guardian) as Officer Oliver, among others.

The plot of the film revolves around a single mother who finds her life upended by a string of misfortunes that force her down a road she never saw coming. Struggling to keep afloat, she becomes caught in a web of suspicion and blame, driven by desperation in a world that barely notices she’s there.

Now, Netflix has confirmed the new film will drop on Friday, June 6th, 2025. The film will have a runtime of 1 hour and 45 minutes and is currently rated TV-MA

Of course, this is just the latest Tyler Perry project to head to Netflix.

Just recently, Netflix announced it was working on a film called Doing Life with Tyler Perry, too, which has already begun production in Atlanta at Tyler Perry’s sprawling studio lot. That’s in addition to confirmation that Beauty in Black will return for Season 2, with production on that having been expected to have come to an end. Next up is She The People, which will get a release date imminently, in addition to R&B and Madea’s Destination Wedding.

We’ll keep you posted on all things Tyler Perry and Netflix in our preview guide to his slate here.

Casting directors on the project include Rhavynn Drummer and Kim Coleman. Angie Bones, Perry, and Tony Strickland are producing. Justyn Moro is behind the cinematography.

Will you check out Straw when it drops on Netflix? Let us know in the comments and keep this post bookmarked as we’ll update it the second we’ve got more first look snaps at the new movies and the trailer as and when that becomes available.
