Trigger Warning, Gangs of Galicia, and Under Paris – Pictures: Netflix
Welcome to a quieter Netflix top 10 report this week. We’ll be looking at the opening numbers for several titles, including the big new Jessica Alba action movie Trigger Warning and some international titles like Gangs of Garcia and Inheritance.
Note: In this report of Netflix’s hours viewed from June 17th, 2024 to June 23rd, 2024, we’ll use “Complete Viewings Equivalent,” or CVE, expressed in millions. That means we divide the hours viewed announced by Netflix by the runtime of films or series. It allows for better comparisons between films and series, but it’s not an audience metric. It is the minimum number of viewings if they were all complete from the first second to the last of the film or season.
1. Under Paris is basically above everything else.
French action film Under Paris keeps swimming in the charts as it crosses the 14-day mark after its release, opening up the field of comparisons in my dataset. With an estimated 73.8M CVEs over that period, this is the second-best opening for a Netflix international original film released since June 2021, only beaten by Troll.
If we take another step back, it is also the 18th-best opening for any Netflix film released since June 2021, between Me Time and Senior Year.
That’s not bad at all for 15-20M$ film per its producers.
Now, how high can it go over its first 91 days?
So far, it has evolved like Troll, so it might get to 98M CVEs, making it the third most-watched international film. Society of the Snow started lower but had a killer run over the first 13 weeks. That’s something that Under Paris might be unable to replicate unless the start of the Olympic Games in Paris jolts its viewing.
2. Trigger Warning starts a bit slow
There is nothing to be ashamed of when your film starts with 25.7M CVEs over its first three days.
That’s a solid start, the fourth of the year for a Netflix English film released on a Friday in 2024, but it also feels a bit softer than Netflix might have expected.
It is positioning it mid-June (the “end of Financial quarter money time for potential blockbuster films on streaming”) and features Jessica Alba, who came back after a hiatus starring in films. So, it’s a good start but not great.
3. It was “Polish Films Week” for Netflix.
Two Polish films released on the same day? That’s a bit strange, but it’s okay, as the two films were very different. Inheritance is a comedy, while Kleks Academy is a fantasy film for kids and teenagers.
Their opening days were also quite varied. Inheritance had a great launch with 10.5M CVEs, while Kleks Academy only reached 3.7M CVEs.
Now, that might be because I suspect the film was not available globally, which hinders films when we compare them to truly global films.
The release of the Polish film Inheritance pushed another film, Inheritance, into the English top 10 last week. It’s funny how that works sometimes.
4. Another lackluster week for sports-adjacent programming.
NFL is the main American sports league, and since Netflix does not have NFL games until Christmas, it’s been dabbling into NFL-adjacent programming with titles such as Quarterback or the soon-to-be-released Receiver. America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders is also in that category, but its debut week is quite disappointing, with only 2.3M CVEs and a launch wedged between two true crime docuseries from France and India. It’s very lackluster, indeed.
5. Gangs of Galicia starts slow.
Spanish series have been doing great in 2024 so far with successes such as The Asunta Case and Raising Voices, but the newly-released Gangs of Galicia is not following that trend for its opening three days as it launched with only 2.9M CVEs
It might pick up the pace in its second week, as those series usually do.
