The Legacy of Whitetail Deer Hunters is now on Netflix and if you’re wondering whether the movie is for you or looking for some more information post-watch. This is your before and after guide to Netflix’s latest Original movie.
Netflix has now put out two hunting movies in a row with Calibre arriving last Friday. With that said, this is a remarkably different kind of story and thankfully, strikes a much lighter tone.
Here’s a breakdown of everything you need to know before you start watching the movie including what it’s about, who it is for and its review scores. After you finish watching, we’ll take you through the soundtrack, cast list, answer some questions which you might have and most importantly did Buck take that final shot.
Before you watch
Directed by: Jody Hill (Vice Principals, Observe and Report)

What’s the movie about?
Although the trailer paints it as a comedy as its category, we’d say it’s more of a drama. The star of the show is Buck Ferguson who is a well-known hunting star. He’s filming a new episode of his hit show but bringing his son out for the first time to hunt. Sadly, his son isn’t as interested as his father on the trip.
Review Scores
The movie has only been out in the wild for the past few days but there’s still plenty of reviews trickling in. The overall consensus is that this isn’t a bad movie but it’s also not the greatest scoring slap bam in the middle.
Variety gave the movie a score of 60 stating that “McBride is good for a few chuckles” but added that “Brolin remains the main attraction and the saving grace”. The most negative review comes from ScreenCrush, who states, “The Legacy of a Whitetail Deer Hunter is a major disappointment, but, as proven by two phenomenal seasons of Vice Principals, Hill is still more than capable of delivering the goods.”

Cast List
At first, we didn’t realize that Josh Brolin starred in 2018’s biggest movie, The Avengers. He played Thanos, so this role is noticeably different, and he’s not the only one who appeared in both of these movies.

---|---|---|
Josh Brolin | Buck Ferguson | Avengers: Infinity War, No Country for Old Men, W. |
Carrie Coon | Jaden’s Mom | Fargo, The Sinner, The Leftovers |

Scoot McNairy | Gregg | Argo, Monsters |
Montana Jordan | Jaden | Young Sheldon |
Ending Explained
Although the film is premise and ultimate conclusion are relatively simple, you may still have some questions. Here are the ones we had left.
Did buck shoot the deer at the end?
At the end of the movie, Buck finally comes into view of the deer he had been hunting for most of the movie. Unlike before, Buck hesitated before lifting the gun once more, and then the credits roll. Of course, he shot the deer.
Why did Buck and Jaden’s Mom divorce?
It’s been two years since the pair divorced, and throughout the movie, we get a few reasons why they eventually separated. Buck’s alcohol abuse seems to be the main reason, given the second things become tough, he disappears and starts drinking.
Is this a real story? Can I watch the end movie?
This isn’t a real story, and sadly, you can’t watch the end result of the film they were producing. It would’ve made a good little easter egg for Netflix to add the final movie to YouTube. Plenty of shows mimic a lot of what they were producing, though.
