The Last Kingdom Season Netflix Renewal Release Date

The Last Kingdom – Copyright Netflix

The Last Kingdom just dropped its third season on Netflix and if you’re like us, you’re probably wanting information regarding its fourth season. Here’s our ongoing updated guide to the next season, whether it’ll happen, reactions to Season 3, and more.

A quick catch-up before we start to look into the show’s future.

The Last Kingdom is a TV adaptation of the novel series named The Saxon Stories. The first season was produced by BBC entirely before Netflix picked up the streaming rights. Season 2 was co-produced by both Netflix and the BBC, and the most recent season was picked up completely by Netflix.

Season 3 was just released on November 19th, 2018.

Is there scope for a season 4?

Absolutely. If you watch till the end of Season 3, you know that there are plenty of loose threads. Speaking to the press at comic-con in London last year, the executive producer of the series, Stephen Butchard, revealed: “In terms of the books, we tend to go through two books a series, so at the end of season three, we’re up to book six.”

That means we still have the following novels to cover: The Pagan LordThe Empty ThroneWarriors of the StormThe Flame Bearer, and the most recent War of the Wolf.

Has The Last Kingdom been renewed for Season 4?

Official Renewal Status: Officially Renewed (last updated: 11/25/2018)

The show was renewed just four days before Christmas, which is a great present! The announcement came from Twitter, with many of the cast doing a gag with confirmation at the end that it was renewed.

When will Season 4 be on Netflix?

Sadly, the show hasn’t followed a strict yearly schedule like many other shows. The wait between the first and second seasons was around a year, as was the wait between seasons two and three.

This means a new season will not likely be released until 2020. With Netflix now the sole party involved with the title, it may have the resources to speed up the release.

One of the best places to keep up-to-date with the show’s Season 4 progress is the show’s official Twitter account and the account of its production company.

What to watch in the meantime

Netflix has plenty of other titles for you to watch in the meantime while waiting for Season 4. Of course, the big comparisons for the series are Vikings and Game of Thrones. With the absence of both, you’ll have to rely on several other shows that are on Netflix.

Alongside Season 3 of The Last Kingdom, Netflix also released the next season of its Canadian historical series, Frontier, this week. That show has many similarities. Going back a bit, we’d implore you to check out the canceled Marco Polo, which led the way for big-budget Netflix Original productions. Sticking with Netflix Originals, our final suggestion is to check out the movie Outlaw King, starring Chris Pine, released just last month.
