The creators behind Money Heist, Berlin, Sky Rojo, and White Lines are currently producing their next major Netflix series, The Fallout Shelter (also known as El Refugio atómico). Here’s what we know so far about the new show.

The show is helmed by Álex Pina and Esther Martínez Lobato, the duo behind the hit Money Heist series, which still occupies (along with its spin-off) multiple spots in Netflix’s most-watched series list of all time. Production kicked off on the show in early February 2024 with directors Jesús Colmenar, David Barrocal and Jose Manuel Cravioto. Writing the series are Álex Pina, Esther Martínez Lobato, David Barrocal, David Oliva, Lorena G. Maldonado and Humberto Ortega with visual design coming from Migue Amoedo.

News of the show first came via The Hollywood Reporter back in March 2022 when it was announced that Netflix had extended its deal with the Spanish creator. Back then, the show was greenlit and referred to as an untitled “Pandemic Series,” the only plot details revealed being that it’s “set in a luxury underground bunker, where the country’s one percent retreat to escape catastrophe on the surface.”

This isn’t the only series Álex Pina currently has in the works. As recently announced, the Money Heist spin-off series Berlin has been renewed for a second season. That return, however, won’t be coming anytime soon, given that it’s not due to begin production until 2025 after The Fallout Shelter has been completed. Beyond that, Pina suggested Money Heist could come back in some form, but no other new projects have been announced just yet.

What’s The Fallout Shelter about?

Kimera Underground Part Netflix

Per Netflix, here’s the official logline for the upcoming series:

“Imagine that World War III is about to break out and a group of billionaires takes refuge in a luxury bunker: Kimera Underground Park. Through screens, they’ll watch the bewildering spectacle of the world they knew collapsing above their heads. As the situation outside becomes increasingly terrifying, they’ll enjoy an underground city with basketball court, restaurant, zen garden, cocktail bar, psychologist’s couch, gym and spa. Their ancient privilege will be reduced to a life adapted to a luxurious hole, an underground universe full of enigmas where a wound from the past will explode between two conflicting families.”

Pina said the show is inspired by a newspaper article, “Some of the new shelters that were being built were luxury homes in the subsoil,” Pina told the outlet, adding, “Up to 15 floors down, with exclusive services, such as cinema, pool, spa, gym and common gardens, with water and food to survive more than five years. An underground community for 75 people. And then we thought about what life would be like there.”
