Netflix Announces May 2025 Release Date for Spanish True-Crime Film ‘A Widow’s Game’

The first look at the film starring Ivana Baquero, Carmen Machi, and Tristán Ulloa revealed.

A Widow’s Game (or La viuda negra in Spanish-speaking regions) is Netflix’s new thriller based on a true story. Netflix has officially unveiled the release date, first-look images, and teaser for the upcoming film, which is set to arrive globally on May 30th, 2025.

Directed by Carlos Sedes (Now and Then, Fariña), the film is inspired by the real-life case known in Spain as the “Black Widow of Patraix,” who was sentenced to 22 years in prison in November 2020.

The story begins in August 2017, when the body of a man is discovered in a Valencia parking garage—stabbed seven times. Initially presumed a crime of passion, the case is assigned to the city’s homicide unit, led by a veteran inspector. But the investigation quickly takes a surprising turn, pointing to an unlikely suspect: Maje, the young and seemingly sweet widow, married to the victim for less than a year.

Ivana Baquero (Pan’s Labyrinth, High Seas) leads the cast as María Jesús Moreno Cantó (a.k.a. Maje), with Carmen Machi (Criminal, Mother’s Love) playing Eva, the lead investigator. Tristán Ulloa (Berlin, The Asunta Case) co-stars as Salva. Rounding out the cast are Joel Sánchez, Álex Gadea, Pablo Molinero, Pepe Ocio, Ramón Ródenas, Amparo Fernández, and Miquel Mars.

The film is produced by Bambú Producciones—the team behind acclaimed Spanish series such as Fariña, the 2024 Netflix hit The Asunta Case, and most recently, the period drama comedy The Lady’s Companion. The movie is penned by the same writing team behind The Asunta Case, which spent six weeks in the global top 10 and picked up over 150 million hours watched, equating to 28.50 million views.
