Special Ops: Lioness
Netflix is picking up the licensing rights to another Paramount+ show! Special Ops: Lioness (also known as just Lioness) will be available on Netflix in Latin American regions, Australia, and Canada on April 17th, 2025. Currently, only the first season is expected to land on Netflix.
Created by Taylor Sheridan, the series first premiered on Paramount+ in July 2023 and recently released its second season in the latter months of 2024. There’s currently no news regarding a third season. Headlined by Zoe Saldaña, Laysla De Oliveira, Dave Annable, and Jill Wagner, the series centers on CIA operative Joe balancing her personal and professional life while spearheading a task force designed to tackle the war on terror.
This is just the latest show that Paramount has licensed out to Netflix over the past few years as the streaming wars take a toll on the embattled distributor, which is currently being sold to Skydance.
As reported, some of Paramount+’s most prominent shows have been licensed to Netflix in select regions over the past few years. School Spirits, in addition to several Showtime series, found its way onto Netflix US back in late 2023. In the case of Star Trek: Prodigy, Netflix saved the show for its second season. Elsewhere, Netflix has licensed Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Yellowstone, Halo, and, most recently, 1883.
As mentioned, only the first season is expected to stream, with the hopes from Paramount being that once you’ve binged through all of season 1, you’ll sign up for Paramount+ (where it’s available) to watch through S2.
Will other regions of Netflix pick up Lioness down the line?
It’s likely but not 100% confirmed. Some of the prior-mentioned Paramount+ shows have often come to Netflix in stages and rollouts. Yellowstone, for instance, was rolled out onto Netflix in almost all international territories over the course of two years. Of course, a lot of it will come down to local agreements if a broadcaster or other streamer is involved in the distribution currently. Also, we expect the show to remain as a Paramount+ exclusive where the show is most popular. That means a US release is improbable.
