Netflix has just confirmed that it’ll be releasing another big new David Attenborough-narrated documentary series. Premiering first on Sky in the United Kingdom earlier this year, the three-part nature docuseries will now come to Netflix in all other regions starting August 7th, 2024.

As mentioned, this is the fifth major David Attenborough project on Netflix following two seasons of Netflix’s flagship docu-series, Our Planet, David Attenborough: Life on our Planet, Life in Colour, and Breaking Boundaries. The well-known documentarian and nature activist is now 98 years old.

As mentioned, the series aired on Sky between February and March 2024 in the United Kingdom. We similarly saw Predators, narrated by Tom Hardy, arrive on Netflix last year following its initial premiere on Sky.

Here’s a breakdown of the episodes:

  • Hunters and Hunted (Season 1, Episode 1) – Animals rely on sound for survival, using it to hunt, defend themselves, and escape, as illustrated by great grey owls detecting voles under snow and kangaroo rats evading rattlesnakes.
  • Love and Rivals (Season 1, Episode 2) – Animals like gibbons, dippers, and lyrebirds use melodious songs to attract mates and ward off rivals, with unique sounds like bull elk bugles and deep-sea fish hums.
  • Finding a Voice (Season 1, Episode 3) – Baby animals use their voices to announce their arrival, beg for food, and call for help in their early fight for survival.

In the short teaser for the series, embedded below, Attenborough explains what we can expect from the series: “We are only just beginning to understand that animals use sound. The most advanced audio technology can now record sounds we can’t even hear. For some animals, sound is the key to finding a mate, calling to their parts, and warning off the competition. It’s time to open your ears to life as you’ve never heard it before.”

As sound is front and center in the new multi-part series, we highly recommend watching it with the best setup possible. It’ll use your high-end sound system to its full ability in addition to stunning 4K HDR visuals.

Humble Bee Films and Infield Fly Productions are behind the new series with Thomas Kent, Bridget Appleby, Gemma Brandt, and Rebecca Hart directing. Suad Bushnaq provides the soundtrack.

Don’t forget this is just one of several nature documentary series Netflix has in store for you in the near future. We’re still expecting Our Oceans, a mini-series being filmed by Roger Horrocks, Justin Maguire, and Roger Munns for Freeborn Media, to drop this year. Next year, we’ll see the release of Our Water World.

Also, on August 22nd, 2024, the documentary feature Secret Lives of Orangutans will premiere. It serves as a spin-off to Our Planet season 1, and Huw Cordey will direct it.

Let’s cap off with a few more pictures of the forthcoming Netflix Original documentary series:
