Ryan Murphy Confirms ‘The Watcher’ Season 2 Won’t Release on Netflix in 2024

We can probably expect the show to land on Netflix in 2025 instead.

The Watcher Season Not Coming To Netflix In

Picture: Netflix

We’ve slowly been getting a bigger picture of what’s coming up on Netflix in 2024, and one big show missing is The Watcher, which was renewed for a second season last year.

In case you missed it, The Watcher was the limited series that was released in late 2022, close to DAHMER. Like DAHMER, the series became a huge hit for Netflix, ranking at one point in the all-time top 10 with 447.10 million hours watched in the first 90 days, translating to 79.60 completed viewing equivalents.

The series scored a renewal in late 2022, but all has been quiet on the show since then. Presumably, the writers’ and actors’ strike hurt any momentum on the show throughout 2023, but thanks to a new post from Murphy and an update from Netflix, we can rule out the show coming this year.

The news comes via Instagram, where Ryan Murphy Productions posted a picture explaining his output coming up for 2024 while celebrating the recent accolade of Feud becoming the most-watched TV on Hulu. The caption is as follows:

“Feud: Capote vs. The Swans” is the first of seven shows I have coming out in 2024. Thank you to everyone who tuned in and instantly made it Number One on FX/Hulu.”

So, what are these seven shows coming up in 2024?

The folks at The AHS Zone whittled the list down to these seven:

  • 9-1-1 (Season 7)
  • 9-1-1: Lone Star (Season 5)
  • American Horror Stories (Season 4)
  • American Horror Story: Delicate (Part 2)
  • FEUD (Season 2)
  • Gladiator: American Sports Story
  • Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menéndez Story (Technically season 2)

The post comes at the same time when another Ryan Murphy Netflix series, Ratched, has been announced not to return for a second season despite an initial upfront order. Likewise, The Politician isn’t expected to return to Netflix either, leaving just Monsters and The Watcher as Murphy’s only active projects at Netflix following his move back to Disney. It’s unclear where other projects announced to be in development, like A Chorus Line, Consent, the Marlen Dietrich series, or Outfielder, are in their lifecycles if they’re still even active.

In addition to Murphy’s post, we can also see from Netflix’s unveiling of the 90+ series due out in 2024 that The Watcher is notably missing, too. Indeed, unlike Monsters, which is currently in production, The Watcher hasn’t begun pre-production yet, and we’re not even aware that it’s planning to get into production anytime soon, either.

Other big shows expected to return in 2025 and not 2024 include Virgin River season 6, Ginny & Georgia season 3, Sweet Magnolias season 4, and Stranger Things season 5.

We’ll have more on The Watcher season 2 as and when we get it. Are you disappointed The Watcher won’t be back for a season 2 in 2024?
