Welcome to your weekly rundown of the biggest stories from Netflix’s top 10 hourly figures drop for the week ending June 16th, 2024.
As a reminder, you can search through all of Netflix’s top 10 hours of viewing data, which Netflix began dropping back in July 2021, using our tool, which has some cool enhancements on the way.
Note: In this report of Netflix’s hours viewed from June 10th, 2024, to June 16th, 2024, we’ll use “Complete Viewings Equivalent,” or CVE, expressed in millions. That means we divide the hours viewed announced by Netflix by the runtime of films or series. It allows for better comparisons between films and series, but it’s not an audience metric. It is the minimum number of viewings if they were all complete from the first second to the last of the film or season.
1. Ultraman: Rising is not rising very high.
Let it be said: the June release slot is cursed for Netflix animated movies.
Last year, Nimona opened with lackluster numbers (albeit a pretty universal acclaim), and this year, Ultraman: Rising is pretty much doing the same as the American take on a beloved Japanese intellectual property did not soar with just 4.4M CVEs over its first three days.
June is the month when Netflix (and other streamers) have to deliver big hits to deliver on subscription numbers at the end of the second financial quarter. So Netflix usually releases its big titles. Ultraman: Rising was one of them, but while it did well with critics and audiences that did tune in, it’s not a vast mass hit. In 2022, The Sea Beast did way better, but it was also released in July, maybe a month with more potential for animated movies.
2. Under Paris keeps chomping.
French film Under Paris keeps floating above the competition this week. After only 12 days, the film is at 69.6M CVEs and already number 5 on the all-time Top 10 international films chart.
How high can it go? Well, it has got a decent shot at the number 3 slot with a trajectory now placing it under Troll but above Nowhere. The real competition here is the Spanish film Society of the Snow, which had a trajectory pretty common for a critical darling, meaning a soft launch (but still strong) and great legs over its first 91 days.
Under Paris, a critical darling it is not, so it might lose speed faster and end in the 90M CVEs range, which would still be a great result and a new high mark for French Netflix films.
3. Bridgerton is back
Batch-released series are difficult to analyze as they combine the numbers for the first and second batches into one round number.
In mid-September, we will only know a “real” comparable number for Season 3 of Bridgerton. However, in the meantime, its return still places it behind Stranger Things 4 if we compare the total number of views for the whole season with the number of hours viewed for the first four weeks of part 1 and the first 4 days of part 2. I know it’s not easy to get, but that’s the only thing we can do with the parameters Netflix has laid out.
4. Tour de France is no Tour de Force in the charts.
Sports-adjacent content has been all the rage on Netflix with various documentaries and docuseries, and we’ve been noticing a trend of diminishing returns, and we’ve seen that now with the second season of the Tour De France series.
The season two launch only managed to get into the weekly Top 10 because it was released on Tuesday (giving it more days to get views) and because the overall Top 10 is very weak for international content. That said, it did just under the launch of the docuseries NASCAR: Full Speed, which can tell you everything you need to know about the popularity of NASCAR (or the Tour de France).
5. Eric, Raising Voices and the Geek Girl, two weeks later.
We’re at the end of June basically, so it’s maybe time to take a look at the best-launch for English series in 2024, especially since Eric and Geek Girl are in their third week in the charts. Both are doing good run compared to their budget with Eric nearly crossing the 20M CVEs mark and Geek Girl beating The Brothers Sun with absolutely no famous casting or marketing push.
It’s been a strange half of the year, with many successes for Netflix amid fewer releases. There are some resounding flops, too, such as Dead Boy Detectives still awaiting to hear about its season 2 fate.
On the international series side, the Spanish series Raising Voices is also doing very well this year, with 18.9M CVEs after 14 days, the second-best launch for an international series in 2024 so far.
Spanish series are definitely leading the charge in the international charts so far this year with titles from France and South Korea among the mix.
