During its Next on Netflix: Animation event on June 6, 2024, Netflix announced a plethora of new animated projects and provided updates on many already announced. Among the new titles announced was Tokyo Override, a new animated series set in Japan centered around fast motorbikes, hacking, and a neon cyberpunk aesthetic.

The plot summary for Netflix’s Tokyo Override is the following:

“In AI-optimized Tokyo 100 years in the future, an orphan teenage hacker blends in until a favor for her only friend inadvertently draws her into a benevolent gang of outcast motorcyclists, uncovering the seemingly utopian city’s sinister underbelly through a murder investigation linked to a drug syndicate.”

The series is directed by Yuske Fukada (Perfect World, Ultimate Beastmaster) and Veerapatra Jinanavin (Midnight Story)

We can see a small glimpse at the aesthetic of the series from the first look photos Netflix has released:

RiFF Studio produces Tokyo Override’s animation. The Thai-based studio’s credits include Mantra Warrior: Legend of the Eight Moons, EVANGELION: 3.0+1.0 THRICE UPON A TIME, Nine Satra, and more.

The show’s producers are Yuske Fukada, Sornperes Subsermsri, and Kwunchanok Meesilpa.

It’s also been announced that Netflix’s Tokyo Override was created in collaboration with YAMAHA and Honda Motor, which implies we’ll see accurate, licensed versions of the bikes in the show.

Tokyo Override’s official release date is 2024, although no precise date has been announced. With only six months left to 2024, we should know the exact release date sooner rather than later.

Other anime previewed at the Next on Netflix: Animation event include My Oni Girl and Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Cosmos The Movie, the former of which was released in late May and the latter set for an August 2024 debut. We also got a project reveal for Leviathan, a new anime series coming in 2025.
