The Sandman fans rejoice! Netflix has just announced that the second and final season of the fantasy series will air in July 2025 with a split release. We also have a new teaser trailer to digest.
The Sandman season 1 premiered in 2022 to great critical acclaim. Despite a delay of a few months, Netflix renewed the series for more episodes in November 2022. The wait for the next instalment, which we now know is the show’s final season, has taken years. But now, Netflix has finally dropped a release date, confirming that the season is split into two parts: Volume 1 (July 3rd); and Volume 2, (July 24th). The Sandman season 2 will consist of 12 episodes; Volume 1 contains 6 episodes, while Volume 2 has 5.
A split release was always on the cards given the nature of The Sandman. Like season 1, the series shifts tone and storylines constantly. Fans of the comics can expect to see Volume 1 cover the Season of Mists story arc, in which Lucifer abandons Hell and leaves the Key to Hell with Morpheus, who must find someone worthy of inheriting the realm. We also know that the Brief Lives arc will be covered. The final Volume will cover the comic’s epic endgame, as covered in comics The Kindly Ones and The Wake. Given the TV show’s condensed narrative, viewers can expect some storylines to be omitted.
The official synopsis for the final season reads: “In Netflix’s The Sandman Season 2, Dream of the Endless — after a fateful reunion with his family — must face one impossible decision after another as he attempts to save himself, his kingdom, and the waking world from the epic fallout of his past mistakes.”
The final season has a stacked cast behind it. Among the star-studded ensemble cast for season 2 are the arrivals of some big names, including Steve Coogan, Freddie Fox, Barry Sloane, Jack Gleeson, Adrian Lester, and many more. You can check out our comprehensive cast list here.

The Sandman show runner Allan Heinberg teases season 2
Ahead of the new season, Netflix’s TUDUM also caught up with show runner Allan Heinberg about the final season. He confirms that season 2 kicks off a few weeks following the season 1 finale:
At the end of last season, Dream uncreated the rogue nightmare, The Corinthian, and destroyed the Dream Vortex that threatened to consume his kingdom and our universe. Meanwhile, in Hell, Lucifer and Mazikeen plotted their revenge against Dream for having publicly embarrassed them in Episode 104. Finally — in an important coda to the season — Dream came to the aid of his estranged wife, the muse Calliope, with whom he had fallen out over the fate of their son, Orpheus.
Season Two begins a few weeks later. After more than a century away from the Dreaming, Dream has been restoring and rebuilding his kingdom. As he transforms the palace, he vows to leave the past behind and look to the future. The past, of course, has other ideas.
He also rhapsodised about the arrival of the youngest member of The Endless, Delirium. Her arrival on our screens will be met with much joy from comic book readers. “Delirium is a fan favorite character in The Sandman comics,” he said. “I was a bit intimidated, having to write Delirium because her voice is so specific. I thought it would be difficult, if not impossible, to cast that role, so we were incredibly lucky that Esmé Creed-Miles was available and interested. The moment she opened her mouth in her audition tape, we knew she was Delirium. She was deft — and daft — and simple and true, and we’re all madly in love with her.”
As for Dream himself, it’s a season of having to deal with the immense consequences and fallout of his past mistakes. “This season is about Dream’s having to accept responsibility for his arrogance, for his ignorance, and for his feelings — which he doesn’t even admit to having. But sooner or later, we all have to reckon with the fact that the struggles we face are often of our own making. Dream must now figure out what to do about it,” Heinberg explained.
