It’s been almost three years since we saw the release of the excellent Japanese series Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories. With subscribers thinking the series had been left on ice will be ecstatic to hear that the next season will be arriving this Fall! What is Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories?
Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories is a Netflix Original Japanese anthology series based on the manga of the same name by Yarō Abe. Set in the nightlife district of Tokyo, Shinjuku, the series is centered around a small restaurant called “Meshiya” that is open from the hours of 12 am to 7 am. Meshiya is the perfect watering hole, for those looking for a drink after hours.
Owner, chef, and bartender of the Meshiya is known only as Master. A wonderful chef, Master is able to produce whichever dish his patrons order with the limited supplies he has available. His patrons range from salaryman to Yakuza and prostitutes. Master refrains from involving himself in the personal affairs of his patrons but sometimes offers guidance and advice to his patrons that are in need.
Is Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories based on a real-life restaurant?
The Japanese take great pride in their cooking as do many nations. A common sight throughout the cities of Japan are beautiful, little quaint restaurants that seat only a small number of patrons.
The area of Tokyo where the series takes place, Shinjuku, is famous for its busy nightlife.
These restaurants/diners are called Izakaya, they are well known for being open after hours where a patron can have an after-hours drink.
Are there more Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories titles?
When Netflix picked up the Japanese title three seasons and two movies had already been produced:
- Midnight Diner Season 1 to 3
- Midnight Diner (2015)
- Midnight Diner (2016)
Despite the three seasons that came before, Midnight Diner: Toyko Stories is acknowledged as the first season outside Japan. Whereas in Japan the Netflix series is acknowledged as season four.
What is the plot of season 2?
As an anthology series, each episode is centered around a different patron and a dish Master has prepared.
Master will continue to cook delicious meals and serve hearty drinks to his patrons.

Each season of Midnight Diner has arrived with ten episodes. The next season will also arrive with ten more brand new episodes.
What are the episode run times?
Each episode is approximately 30 minutes long.
Will the series be available to stream in 4K?
Sadly the series is unavailable to stream in 4K.
Has Netflix dropped a trailer for Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories season 2?

Are the first Midnight Diner series and the movies streaming on Netflix?
Unless you have access to the Japanese or South Korean Netflix, you won’t be able to stream any of the previous Midnight Diner Titles.
