The latest installment in the Jumanji franchise, Jumanji: The Next Level is now available to watch in theatres around the world. For Netflix subscribers, the important question is whether or not Jumanji: The Next Level is coming to the streaming service. Unfortunately, the wait could be extensive but there’s a chance we’ll see Jumanji: The Next Level on Netflix sometime in the future.
It came as a major surprise to long-time fans of the 90s film Jumanji, that the film would receive the reboot treatment. After a fantastic commercial success with Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, it should come as no surprise that Sony lined up a sequel, Jumanji: The Next Level. At the time of writing, Jumanji: The Next Level has been out for less than a week, but has already made over $200 million at the box office.
Three years on after Spencer, Martha, Fridge, and Bethany beat the game Jumanji, the group promised to reunite. After Spencer fails to show up, Martha, Fridge, and Bethany go in search of their friend, only to discover Spencer has been sucked back into the world of Jumanji. Determined to bring him back to the real world, the trio goes back into the dangerous world, only to discover Spencer’s grandfather Eddie, and his friend Milo have also been dragged along. What they discover is an even more dangerous world, and survival is harder than ever.
Will Jumanji: The Next Level come to Netflix US?
There’s a chance that Netflix US will license Jumanji: The Next Level, sometime in the near future, but not until after 2021. This is because of the film’s distributor, Sony Pictures Releasing, are currently in a contract with STARZ, who receive all of the latest cinematic titles from Sony.
Once the contract with STARZ comes to an end in 2021, Sony has made it abundantly clear that they won’t be licensing films to streaming services in bundles, and instead their latest cinematic releases will be licensed to the highest bidder. This means that come 2021 if Netflix wants to license one of Sony’s films, they will have to outbid Amazon, Hulu, and other streaming services.
For subscribers with a Netflix DVD subscription, they will be able to rent Jumanji: The Next Level sometime in 2020.
Is Jumanji: The Next Level coming to Netflix in other regions?
In the United Kingdom, Jumanji: The Next Level will be available to stream on Sky and Now TV. For both services, you will need a Sky Movies subscription if you want to stream the latest Jumanji movie.
In Canada, a subscription to Crave will give you access to titles from Sony’s library. Netflix Canada often receives titles around the same time is Netflix US, so the Canadian library could receive Jumanji: The Next Level after 2021.
If Jumanji: The Next Level doesn’t arrive on Netflix Australia, the best place to look would be Foxtel or Amazon Prime.
Expect to see Jumanji: The Next Level arrive on streaming services in the Summer of 2020.
