Up-and-coming actress Bailey Tippen recently starred as Sylvie in Tyler Perry’s great family crime drama Beauty in Black. We recently had the opportunity to discuss the role and her experience on set with Bailey.
Beauty in Black is Tyler Perry’s first Netflix series and has already been a smash hit, having amassed over 28.5 million views since its release, which has resulted in its renewal for a second season.
The story is centered around the lives of Kimmie, a stripper and escort, and Mallory, the CEO of her family’s powerful cosmetics empire, who clash violently and chaotically, changing their lives forever.
Prior to her role as Sylvie in Beauty in Black, actress Bailey Tippin starred in television shows such as Sleepy Hollow, Underground, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, BMF, and First Wives Club.
Jacob: How did you first become involved with Beauty in Black?
Bailey: So, I received an audition for the role after I’d read through the storyline and character, and I just knew it was something I wanted to be a part of. But that’s how I came across the role!

Jacob: What was it like working with Tyler Perry?
Bailey: It was really cool working with Tyler Perry. He’s like a mastermind genius, and it was really cool to work alongside him because he’s so insightful and gives us good information for our characters. It was really inspiring to be at his production.

Jacob: Your character, Sylvie, we didn’t see much of her in the first half of Beauty in Black, but the character came into her own towards the end of part two, how was that?
Bailey: It was awesome, it was an awesome Journey!
Jacob: What was it like on set with Taylor [Polidore Williams]? Did she take you under her wing while you were on set?
Bailey: Taylor is like a big sis; she’s as kind as she appears on the show. So it was really easy working with Taylor, it just really good vibes.
Jacob: What do you think comes next for Sylvie?
Bailey: Oh gosh! I mean, there are so many possibilities! Hopefully, we will see Sylvie in a happier position than she was before.
Jacob: Of all the characters in the show, Sylvie is still one of the most innocent characters, given how everyone’s betrayed each other in some fashion or another.
Bailey: Yeah, she’s not very evil like most of the family members, but I would love to see the way that her character is developed!
Jacob: Do you know what to expect from the second season? Will you be returning as Sylvie?
Bailey: Oh, I’m not sure if I can say that! But there are great things in the work, and I mean lots of more interesting stories, so make sure to stay tuned!
Jacob: The first season was fun to watch because I didn’t know what to expect going into it, and there were just so many twists and turns in the series.
Bailey: Thank you! Yes, it’s definitely a show that keeps you on the edge of your seat, wondering, “Oh my gosh, what just happened!”
Jacob: In the past, you’ve worked on BMF and First Wives Club; how did those experiences help you going into Beauty in Black and playing Sylvie?
Bailey: I mean, wow, the characters are just so different! But I think just working with a production that feels like family, and I think those roles and production that I also worked they really took me in like family, and I feel that way about this one too.
Jacob: I can only imagine the whiplash everyone on set gets, considering how awful the characters on the show are to each other, and then contrast that with how nice everyone is on set?
Baily: No, like, for real, you would be so shocked. They’re very kind, and the whole production is about teamwork, humility, and kindness. Then, as soon as the cameras turn on, it’s like a switch, you know?

Jacob: What was the toughest challenge about the role for you?
Bailey: Oh, the toughest challenge? I would say diving into this very dark and twisted universe is a challenge because my life is so different! But of course, I am making sure that I’m doing Sylvie justice and telling her the truth as authentically as possible.
