Matt Charman has set up his next series on Netflix, In The Room (Deadline reports the name as The Choice). Production will begin in mid-March 2024 and run through May 2024 in the United Kingdom and be officially unveiled at Next on Netflix in London on March 14th.
The new limited series will have five episodes, each lasting 60 minutes. It was written by Matt Charman and produced under his Binocular Productions banner.
This is the latest in a string of projects from Charman at Netflix. His first released project came in the form of another political thriller called Treason, a mini-series released in 2020 helmed by Charlie Cox, Ciarán Hinds, and Olga Kurylenko. Released on December 26th, 2022, the show featured in the global Netflix top 10s for two weeks and picked up 74.52M hours watched globally. According to the Netflix Engagement Report, the series was watched for 74.30 million hours between January and June 2023.
Charman also served as the writer and director of The Mothership for Netflix, which we recently learned was scrapped despite being mostly finished. The writer was also at one stage attached to a limited series called Watergate for Smokehouse Pictures, where Charman was teaming up with George Clooney. That project has since gone quiet, however.
Foz Allan, a renowned TV producer behind Riveria, Wolfblood, and The Athena, serves as executive producer on the series alongside Charman.
What to Expect from Netflix’s In The Room / The Choice
The plot of the series revolves around tensions that arise when the British Prime Minister’s husband has been abducted in the French Guiana. That dynamic is explored between the British PM and French President, who are on the opposite side of the political spectrum and have different ideas on how to resolve the situation.
Suranne Jones is set to play the lead role of Annabel Reston, the British prime minister in the series. Jones is best known for her myriad of roles on British TV for the likes of the BBC and ITV. Her best-known projects include Vigil, Gentlemen Jack, Doctor Foster, and A Touch Of Cloth.
Further casting for the series is expected to be announced imminently. Other main castings to be announced for the series include French President Vivienne Touissant (whom we hear Camille Cottin was considered for the role), the aforementioned abducted husband, and their daughter Sylvie Reston, described as a rebellious teen.
Netflix declined to comment when we reached out to them earlier this month.
