Reports have been surfacing of the cancelation of one of Netflix’s favorite sitcoms. Is The Ranch coming to an end after season 4 or will it continue? Let’s take a look and see what’s going on.
Before we get into whether or not the show has been canceled, let’s provide a bit of context and history for the show. The first part of The Ranch dropped back in April 2016 with new 10-episode parts then releasing roughly every six months afterwards up until this point.
The show was criticized by critics but quickly found a large audience who regularly tune in to each part. The most recent part released back in December which was part 6. Part 7 of The Ranch is due out later in 2019.
Parts 7 and 8 will make up season 4 of the show which is once again scheduled to consist of 10 episodes and will all be released throughout the course of 2019.
Now let’s get onto the more pressing matter as to whether or not the show has been canceled.
Has The Ranch officially been canceled?
Officially, the show is still ongoing with the current production continuing on the next 20 episodes for release in 2019. Beyond that, the show is pending but that shouldn’t be alarming. Netflix often doesn’t renew or cancel its show until a while after it airs new seasons to gauge whether or not it makes sense to continue.
Where are the rumors coming from?
The rumors have been flying around because of an article in Variety that interviewed one of the shows main stars, Sam Elliot. This was spotted by the eagle-eyed fans of the show over at NetflixLife.
The interview was mainly about Sam Elliot’s recent Oscar nomination but The Ranch was mentioned later on. Here’s what was said: “Tomlin then encouraged him to join her Netflix series “Grace and Frankie” for a few episodes, playing the love interest of Jane Fonda. He soon became a regular on another Netflix series, “The Ranch,” which is shooting its fourth and final season.”
Of course, the key thing here is that it’s shooting its “final season”. In a later interview, Sam Elliot said:
“I committed to doing The Ranch for five years. We’re finishing up our fourth season, supposedly, that’s the end of it, but if they choose to go again, I’ll go again. By the end of five years it would be a hundred episodes. It’s going to be 80 by the end of this year.”
This could suggest that Sam Elliott just isn’t aware that The Ranch could be renewed for season 5 going forward but definitely sounds more optimistic than what was written in Variety.
Of course, the show has gone through a lot of changes recently with the writers being forced to write out Rooster who is no longer part of the show. There were calls for a boycott of the show because of Danny Masterson’s removal from the show after allegations of sexual assault.
Reviews by fans for the show have remained steady despite the changes but without viewer metrics, we can’t assess how well the show is performing otherwise.
