Grace & Frankie is returning to Netflix for season 6 at Netflix in January 2020 and if you’re looking for what’s new, what you can expect and who’s returning for season 6, we’ve got all you need to know. We’ve also got word on season 7 which is set to be the final in the series.
As you may know, the sixth season was renewed before the fifth even aired on Netflix. The series has become Netflix’s second-longest-running comedy series only behind Orange is the New Black.
Given the show is made from the same creator as Friends which has proved a massive success for Netflix and is scheduled for removal, Netflix is hoping to keep the Grace & Frankie train going.
Since 2015, we’ve seen new seasons of the comedy show every single year. The first two seasons released in May, the third in March 2017 and both seasons 4 & 5 have released in January.
Where is season 6 of Grace & Frankie in production?

Season 5 Recap and What to Expect from Grace & Frankie season 6
Let’s recap the events of season 5 and see where that could take us for season 6 of Grace & Frankie.
The final episode of season 5 saw Grace & Frankie reminisce about the last three years and discuss how life would’ve panned out differently if they hadn’t lived with each other over the past three years.
Big changes are likely in store for Grace & Frankie who may find themselves in new living arrangements. That makes sense given that last season Grace married Nick.
Who’s returning for Grace & Frankie season 6?
Thanks to IMDb, we’ve got quite a few confirmations of who will be returning. Of course, the title characters played by Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin will be returning.
Here are the other actors and actresses confirmed to return:
- Sam Waterston as Sol
- Martin Sheen as Robert
- Brooklyn Decker as Mallory
- Ethan Embry as Coyote
- June Diane Raphael as Brianna
- Baron Vaughn as Nwabudike Bergstein
- Peter Cambor as Barry
- Peter Gallagher as Nick
- Michael Charles Roman as Adam
Returning to sit in the director’s seat for season 6 includes Ken Whittingham who will be directing episode 7. Actress and director Betty Thomas will also return to direct episode 6.
Some of the new cast members for this year (mostly in small roles) include Aris Alvarado, Miranda De Meo, Chrisanne Eastwood, Kasey Mahaffy, Tamika Simpkins, Jay Topaoan and Dan Warner.
Will Dolly Parton appear in season 6 of Grace and Frankie?
Grace and Frankie has featured many celebrity cameos through its lifetime already with RuPaul appearing throughout season 5. This season, many have speculated and in fact, demanded that it’s finally time for Dolly Parton to have a role in Grace & Frankie. After all, Fonda and Tomlin appeared alongside the famous singer in the series 9 to 5 back in the 1990s.
It’d make perfect sense that the show would feature Dolly Parton this year given she’s about to appear in a Netflix anthology series due out later this year called Heartstrings.
Tomlin has said it’s a longtime goal to get Parton to appear saying: “We’d like to see Dolly and we keep hoping we’ll work out a schedule, but she’s just so busy,” but ultimately concluded “She does so many things, and now she has a big show deal herself at Netflix, so I don’t know.”.
How many episodes of Grace & Frankie season 6 will there be?
Nothing confirmed as of yet but given the fact all five seasons thus far have had 13 episodes, it’d be mad to consider this season being any different.
When will season 6 of Grace & Frankie be on Netflix?
The series won’t be back until early 2020 at the very earliest. To begin with, all we knew is that: “Grace and Frankie will return for a sixth season in 2020 on Netflix.”. In September 2019, Netflix confirmed that Grace and Frankie season 6 will be on Netflix in January 2020.
It was then confirmed in December 2019 that the official release date for Grace & Frankie season 6 on Netflix is January 15th, 2020.

The show may come back to Netflix in January 2020 which was its timeslot for season 5. That would be notable because Marta Kauffman’s other notable project, Friends, is due to leave Netflix in the US in that month.
The show has also been renewed for a seventh season, which will likely continue with a similar trend, and it will be released in January 2021.
