Netflix has confirmed the release date and unveiled two pictures for its upcoming animated comedy series Good Times, which revives the classic comedy series that ran for six seasons in the 1970s.
Note: This article was first published on March 20th, 2024, and has been updated to reflect new assets and the trailer.
The project was first announced in September 2020, and we recently covered the revival in-depth in our preview published last year. Months have now passed, and Netflix is about to debut the new sitcom as part of its April 2024 schedule.
Carl Jones (best known for The Boondocks) is behind the show with co-creator Ranada Shepard (Born Again Virgin) with executive producers including Norman Lear, Seth MacFarlane, Erica Huggins, Brent Millar, Erick Peyton, Brent Miller, and Stephen Curry.
“Animation is the ideal medium with which to reimagine the original show, and through the lens of Carl’s sharp, biting humor, audiences will grow to love these classic characters all over again,” said MacFarlane and Huggins when the project was first announced.
What can you expect from Good Times, and who’s on the cast?
Here’s the official synopsis of the new series that’s described as a spiritual reboot, courtesy of Netflix:
“In this edgy, irreverent reimagining of the TV classic, a new generation of the Evans family keeps their head above water in a Chicago housing project.”
Jay Pharoah (Saturday Night Live, The Blackening) will voice the role of Junior, Marsai Martin (Little, Black-Ish) will voice Grey, Yvette Nicole Brown (Community) as Beverly, Gerald Anthony ‘Slink’ Johnson (Grand Theft Auto) as Dalvin and JB Smoove (Curb Your Enthusiasm, Blockbuster) will play Reggie.
Norman Lear, Rashida “Sheedz” Olayiwola, Venus DeMilo Thomas, and Jessica Mikayla round out the cast.
Sony Pictures Television is behind the show for Netflix alongside Fuzzy Door Productions, Act III Productions, and Unanimous Media.
This series comes at a time when Netflix Original adult animation is going through a bit of a sticky patch. Much of its roster from the past few years has been canceled (such as Farzar, Captain Fall, and Agent Elvis), and other titles haven’t significantly impacted Netflix’s top 10s. Big Mouth is undoubtedly the most significant show still in Netflix’s adult animation lineup, and it will end with its upcoming season.
