The Disney Channel series Girl Meets World will be shortly departing from Netflix permanently after being available on the streaming service for several years. Here’s why the Disney Channel show is leaving and where we think it’ll end up streaming.
The three seasons of the Disney Channel show are all due to depart from Netflix on February 19th, 2019.
The series carries on from Boy Meets World where Cory and Topanga return to their roles but with the story now primarily focused on their daughter.
The show was a success up until Disney unexpectedly canceled it in 2017. That led to lots of online petitions including a notable one that asked Netflix to revive. Sadly, that never came to fruition.
Season 1 came to Netflix on August 23rd, 2015. Season 2 came to Netflix on October 4th, 2016 and season 3 released on February 19th, 2017.
Why is Girl Meets World leaving?
All titles on Netflix that aren’t Originals are basically loaned to Netflix for a set period of time. Once that loan comes to an end, both Disney and Netflix has to decide to renew the loan.
In this case, because of how old the show is and the fact it’s been streaming for so long, Netflix must feel it’s not worth renewing the license. Another possibility could be that Disney is pulling back their content for their new streaming service due out later.
Where will Girl Meets World stream after it leaves Netflix?
The series will likely find its way onto the new Disney streaming service due out at the end of 2019. The reason we say this is because that’s where it currently streams in the United Kingdom on the DisneyLife service.
It’s a natural fit and likely that any existing Disney Channel title will also make the move over eventually once contracts run out.
Only the United States is affected by this removal but with that said, the US is one of the few countries streaming the title.
