The Anthony Hopkins and Matthew Goode WW2 drama based on a play and released by Sony Pictures Classics just recently, Freud’s Last Session, is now confirmed to be hitting Netflix in the United States.
Released in December 2023, the Matt Brown-directed drama sees Sigmund Freud (played by Hopkins) invite C. S. Lewis (played by Goode) to debate the existence of God shortly after war breaks out across Europe.
Liv Lisa Fries, Jodi Balfour, Jeremy Northam, and Orla Brady round out the cast.
We should point out that there’s a massive gap in reviews on this particular movie. While critics didn’t like it (it holds a 44% on RottenTomatoes), audiences have been far kinder. The title has 73% on RT, and on IMDb, the movie is currently sitting at 6.0/10.
Bill Newcott was on the more positive side for the movie writing for The Saturday Evening Post, “You’d have to be crazy to skip just about any performance by the inestimable Anthony Hopkins, and, despite a scattershot script, there are reasons aplenty to keep this appointment with his crusty, cantankerous take on Sigmund Freud.”
When is Frued’s Last Session coming to Netflix?
As confirmed by Netflix via the UI on the page, the movie will be making its SVOD premiere in the United States on April 20th, 2024.
When will the movie come to Netflix in international regions? That we don’t know although we can confirm it’s just the US getting it in April 2024. We’ve seen other movies from Sony Pictures Classics arrive on Netflix internationally, often several years after their initial premiere.
In the United Kingdom, the movie has yet to be released theatrically and is currently planned to do so in June 2024.
More Sony Movies Coming to Netflix Throughout 2024
Easily one of Netflix’s best output deals when it comes to movies, the Sony deal has been in place in the United States since the beginning of 2022. It’s seen dozens of high-profile movies from Sony Pictures and its various labels come to the streamer with them being added in what’s called the first window.
Sony Pictures Classics movies have also come to Netflix as part of this deal, although not as regularly or as predictable as their main label titles. We’ve seen the likes of Living, starring Bill Nighy drop, Shortcomings starring Sherry Cola and Justin H. Min, and most recently, The Persian Version and Mending the Line.
Lots more Sony Pictures movies are heading to Netflix throughout 2024, including Madame Web, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, and The Garfield Movie.
