Dreamcasting Netflix Scooby Doo Series

Picture: Warner Bros. Animation

It’s official, folks: Netflix is trying its hand at creating a live-action Scooby-Doo series! While very exciting, we don’t envy the casting director’s job of finding the perfect five candidates to portray the iconic roles. But we’re not ones to step down from a challenge, so let’s dreamcast the five members of Mystery Inc.

The five members of Mystery Incorporated, Fred Jones, Daphne Blake, Shaggy Rogers, Velma Dinkley, and their mascot dog Scooby, are some of the most revered names in all of pop culture. The characters first appeared way back in 1969 with Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!, and since then, the team has investigated hundreds of mysteries across television, movies, games, comics, and more. There’s been crossovers (including a fan-favorite Batman crossover movie), and even two cult-classic live-action movies from 2002-2004.

Now, in a move that seemed only a matter of time, Netflix is having a go at bringing the iconic franchise back to life. The series, dubbed a “modern reimagining,” will consist of eight episodes. Check out the official synopsis:

“During their final summer at camp, old friends Shaggy and Daphne get embroiled in a haunting mystery surrounding a lonely lost Great Dane puppy that may have been a witness to a supernatural murder. Together with the pragmatic and scientific townie, Velma, and the strange, but ever so handsome new kid, Freddy, they set out to solve the case that is pulling each of them into a creepy nightmare that threatens to expose all of their secrets.”

Let’s dive right into our dreamcast!

William Franklyn-Miller as Fred

Fredjonesscoobydoonetflix

Our first casting is William Franklyn-Miller as Fred Jones, the leader of our crime-solving, meddling kids. British actor Franklyn-Miller, 21, perfectly suits the quintessential appearance for Fred; he’s near-enough the right age, and, of course, he’s got the blond hair and blue eyes. It’s pretty easy to visualise him in the role.

William Franklyn-Miller is best known for his work on Medici, Arrow, and Four Kids and It. A role in Scooby-Doo could be the perfect platform to add a glistening role to his growing filmography.

Sadie Sink as Daphne

I floated through a couple of ideas for Daphne, including Game of Thrones alum Sophie Turner. But eventually, I landed on Sadie Sink. Even when you put her fiery red hair aside, Sink still has the feel of a perfect Daphne. She’s already got the perfect experience, from her time solving paranormal activities in a group of meddling kids as Max in Netflix’s Stranger Things. This casting almost makes too much sense.

Over the years, Sink has demonstrated her incredible range, from Stranger Things, to The Whale (2022), and most recently, her electric performance in musical movie O’Dessa (2025).

Jack Dylan Grazer as Shaggy

Shaggyscoobydoonetflix

This is perhaps the hardest casting of the entire show. Shaggy’s personality is so larger-than-life and filled with wit, the casting needs to be a stroke of genius to do him justice. But it can be done: Matthew Lillard played the role excellently in the cult 2002 movie. Now, if we’re really going to lean into the Stranger Things cast, I’d say Gaten Matarazzo or Finn Wolfhard a perfect picks for Shaggy, but they would be lazy choices, especially since we’ve already got one Stranger Things star involved. Let’s look to places other than Hawkins.

This brings me to IT and Shazam! star Jack Dylan Grazer. At 21, he fits the age range of our other castings. An esteemed actor, he’s well known for a range of genres, from horror and mystery (IT), to sci-fi, comedy and fantasy (Shazam!). With all of these genres under his belt, and the messy hair to match, we have our Shaggy!

Emma Myers as Velma

Velmascoobydoonetflix

For Velma, a few names come to mind, including Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) and Ayo Edebiri (The Bear), and Peyton Elizabeth Lee (Andi Mack). Despite all being good options for different reasons, Emma Myers takes the spot. Myers’ career has taken off recently, with her currently appearing in A Minecraft Movie. She’s also known for the mystery series A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder. Naturally, Myers also has links to Netflix after appearing in smash-hit series Wednesday. Her quirky personality could add a fresh new take on Velma!

Frank Welker as Scooby

Scoobyscoobydoonetflix

There’s quite literally hundreds of incredible voice actors out there who could do an impressive job at voicing Scooby. We’re talking Andy Serkis, Mark Hamill, or even previous live-action Scooby voice actor Neil Fanning (who has previously hinted at returning to voice the beloved character). Even so, my choice is Frank Wekler. I understand this could be seen as a cop-out answer, but if he’s down, why have someone else?

Welker, 79, is the longest-running cast member in the franchise. He voiced Fred Jones back in the original series. After that, in 2002, he took over from Scooby voice actor Scott Innes, voicing him for many years; most recently in Scoob! (2020). If Welker wants to return, why would anyone want to cast someone else?
