Doctor Who Expiring Netflix

Update – 1st February – It’s now been removed officially. We’ve compiled a list of titles you may also like that are still streaming on Netflix.

Update – 21st January – Yesterday we wrongly reported on a renewal of the contract between the BBC and Netflix. We still believe it will get renewed but there has been no confirmation as of yet.

Periodically Netflix adds expiry dates to their content on Netflix which can be found in the details tab on the programs Netflix page. Today we learned that one of the most successful BBC shows of all time, Doctor Who, has a scheduled departure date from Netflix. The due date for the departure of Doctor Who is February 1st, 2016 but fear not, we have news below that will calm your fears.

The programs currently affected by the expiry date include the new generation of Doctor Who that spans 8 seasons and the classic Doctor Who which Netflix streams “18 Collections”. A Night With The Stars : The Science of Doctor Who is not currently scheduled for departure.

There is of course huge demand for Doctor Who in America as it’s one of the few ways to get commercial free access to the British produced show.

It’s not all bad news however as we suspect that this is just a mandatory expiry date as the contract with the BBC is now up for renewal. It’s happened now two years running where each year we report that BBC content faces the axe. Here’s our articles detailing this from 2015 and 2014 respectively.

So what does this mean? Well it simply means that the BBC shows streaming on Netflix US are simply up for renewal and it’s strongly likely that Netflix will renew the show to continue streaming on Netflix. Although you shouldn’t expect season 9 to arrive just yet.

Hopefully that’s settled your mind as to why Doctor Who won’t be leaving Netflix just yet.
