Netflix has revealed a first-look trailer and release date for its upcoming Wizard of Oz series coming from the animation team of Karma’s World and Ada Twist, Scientist.

Inspired by the 1900 children’s fantasy novel, later adapted into the iconic 1939 movie, Dee & Friends in Oz follows a young girl who discovers a mysterious key, allowing her to travel to the world of Oz, where she must become the hero to save magic.

The series was amongst a slew of announcements that came out of Netflix’s Kids division last September and first reported on by The Hollywood Reporter.

Speaking about the project to the outlet, Halcyon Person, head writer, and co-executive producer, told THR, “We believe that, at its heart, Oz shares messages perfect for young viewers: the importance of friendship, the courage to believe in yourself and that every kid has the power inside them to be a hero.”

The series is produced by frequent Netflix collaborators 9 Story Media Group and Brown Bag Films. The duo previously worked on Karma’s World for Netflix, which ran for four seasons and also saw the release of two volumes of Karma’s World Music Videos. Brown Bag Films worked on Netflix’s Ada Twist, Scientist, Ridley Jones, and Angela’s Christmas.

The release date, February 5th, is confirmed by Netflix today after we first scooped the release date late last year. That also should mean that Netflix’s next major new kids’ animation franchise coming up will be Hot Wheels Let’s Race in March 2024.

A short clip from the upcoming series has been added to the Netflix page for the show, and we’ve uploaded it to our YouTube channel for your convenience:

We’re still awaiting more information on the cast for the upcoming animated series, although it’s rumored that Markeda McKay will be voicing Dee. We’ve asked Netflix for additional details.
