Dark has been renewed at Netflix for its third and likely final season ahead of its season 2 debut on Netflix in June.
The renewal comes just under a month before its second season is due to arrive on Netflix on June 21st. The sci-fi series was first announced all the way back in 2016 but didn’t arrive until December 2017. The mind-bending series, set across three timelines, follows the disappearance of two young children. It’s been highly rated, currently sitting at one of the best scores on IMDb for any Netflix Original foreign series. The announcement that Netflix would conclude the trilogy with the third season came with the season 2 trailer.
On Instagram, Baran Boodar posted a statement about getting a third season:
“And it’s official! We are working on Dark Season 3. It is the final cycle of this great journey We always had three seasons in mind when we developed Dark and are happy to tell you what we will start shooting the third and final season in 4 weeks so we can deliver you guys the final chapter of Dark Next year. Thank you, Netflix for trusting us! Thank you to ALL THE DARK FANS AROUND THE WORLD! You are Amazing!”
The other significant news is that the wait between seasons 2 and 3 will be significantly shorter than the wait between seasons 1 and 2. With shooting beginning later in 2019, Dark is scheduled to return for season 3 in 2020.
Three seasons were expected given they pitched the series on that but Netflix still chose to renew season 2 after season 1 was released. Back in December 2018, Baran bo Odar spoke on a panel saying “we have ideas for three seasons because we don’t want to create something too unsatisfying at the end.”
We’re not too sure where the story will go in season 3. Season 2 is just around the corner, and once it releases, we’ll be sure to look at what we can expect going into season 3 of Dark.
