In case the title confuses you about why we’re reporting on this, it’s because last year a deal was done between Netflix and Sandler’s company Happy Maddison which involved several exclusive movies being created and developed only for the Netflix platform. I myself wasn’t a big fan of the move stating that Sandlers best days are pretty much behind him with most of his recent work considered mediocre and the deal was a free pass for Sandler to create even more mediocre movies.

But more recently lots of controversy has surrounded The Ridiculous 6 and in turn, Netflix. Netflix has always been considered, so far at least, to manufacture really high quality Netflix Originals and many worry that the new Sandler deal will tarnish this reputation. With a leaked script it’s already become clear that it’s not really all that funny – whether the final product is different remains to be seen but it has led to a large amount of Native American actors leaving the set on a day of filming.

Why? Because of the offensive nature of the script which includes age old stereotypes and just generally being offensive. In an interview one of the extras said “One thing that really offended a lot of people was that there was a female character called Beaver’s breath. One character says ‘Hey, Beaver’s Breath.’ And the Native woman says, ‘How did you know my name?’”.

The San Francisco Chronicle also picked out some more lines which could cause deep offense:

“My wife will have a sweet zum-zum, just like Smoking Fox!”

“Say honey, how about after this, we go some place and I put my pee-pee in your tee-pee?”

Now we get it. Comedy includes a wide range of methods to achieve the goal of making you laugh and sometimes it does involve insulting people. But the underlying issue here is that the movie is doing it just to be controversial. Netflix has responded to the recent stories surrounding the controversy calling the movie ‘Satire’.

So what do you make of all this news? Are you excited for Sandlers new movie?
