Netflix has added another documentary to its June 2024 list of upcoming titles, which already boasts 11 new Netflix Original documentaries and docu-series. The critically acclaimed documentary, first aired as a Sky Original, Tell Them You Love Me has confirmed its US premiere on Netflix.
Directed by Nick August-Perna (Tell Them You Love Me, The Swell Season), the hour-and-forty-minute-long documentary feature explores the controversial relationship between a married female professor and a non-verbal Black man with cerebral palsy. The ensuing high-profile criminal trial challenges our perceptions of disability and the nature of consent. Anna Stubblefield and Derrick Johnson are the subjects of the doc.
The Guardian gave the doc a great review upon its initial release, saying, “Tell Them You Love Me might be a hard watch, but it is also a vital one.”
Netflix US is due to receive the documentary on June 14th, 2024 – other regions’ availability will vary.
The news of its Netflix debut comes months after it premiered on Sky Documentaries in the UK in early February 2024.
That press release states that Kino Lorber would be distributing the documentary in North America. In recent months, Netflix has licensed several docs from the distributor, including Remembering Gene Wilder and Radical Wolfe.
The documentary is produced by Mindhouse Productions, which recently teamed with Netflix on the two-part documentary series Can I Tell You A Secret, which was released earlier this year. Other recent projects include The Space Shuttle That Fell to Earth for the BBC and CNN and Louis Theroux Interviews for the BBC and Lockerbie.
Our understanding is that the production company has another project in the works for Netflix, too, which is expected to be a “Sports/Entertainment” docu-series of some description.
