Arcane, one of Netflix’s most critically acclaimed animation series based on League of Legends, is getting a physical release on Blu-Ray and 4K.
GKIDS, best known for distributing the Studio Ghibli library and other animated titles and anime, announced this morning via X:
“GKIDS is proud to announce the acquisition of global home entertainment rights to Season 1 of the worldwide phenomenon, Arcane.
ARCANE is set in the universe of LEAGUE OF LEGENDS, made by Riot Games and Fortiche Productions for Netflix. The series follows the origins of Vi and Jinx as they become caught in the power struggle between the utopian city of Piltover and the oppressed underground city of Zaun.”
GKIDS Films did not announce a release date, but it does provide an email signup form for more information as and when it is announced. They also state, “We will release a full product array, including 4K, later this year.”
Although Netflix Originals coming to physical release is rare, it’s not unheard of. Titles like Arcane, where Netflix does not outright own the underlying rights, have a better shot at getting a physical release. A good example is The Sandman, which got a physical release last year because Warner Bros. Television owns the underlying rights. Titles can also be released in the Criterion collection. You can find a list of all the Netflix Originals that have been made available on DVD and Blu-Ray here.
This news comes quickly after Arcane season 2 was among the shows and movies showcased last week at the Next on Netflix: Animation press event, where Arcane got a few new clips courtesy of a sizzle reel. The new season is set to touch down on Netflix sometime in November 2024.
We may also get more news this week when Arcane will be showcased at the Annecy Film Festival. Arcane’s session will be on Wednesday, June 12, and will feature Showrunner Christian Linke (Riot), Scriptwriter Amanda Overton (Riot), Senior Concept Artist Arnaud Baudry (Riot), Director Bart Maunoury (Fortiche), and Producer Christine Ponzevera (Fortiche).
