The YAIBA manga stretches back to the late 1980s and now will be getting a fresh new anime series that Netflix is set to carry in select regions around the world, including the United States, beginning in April 2025.
Serving as the second adaptation of the manga (the first released back in the early 1990s) created by Gosho Aoyama (Case Closed), the series follows Yaiba, a young boy living in the jungle, where his father is training him to become a samurai. One day, after provoking a horde of giant gorillas, Yaiba unexpectedly finds himself on a journey to Tokyo, accompanied by his father and their new companion—an unusual tiger. Thus begins a series of fantastic adventures…
The animation is provided by Wit Studio, best known for its work on Attack on Titan and Spy x Family. It also worked on the Netflix Original series Vinland Saga. Takahiro Hasui serves as the director of the series, with Touko Machida writing the series scripts and Yoshimichi Kameda serving as character designer and chief animation director.
The Japanese voice cast for the series includes Minami Takayama, Manaka Iwami, Yoshimasa Hosoya, Katsuyuki Konishi, and Junichi Suwabe.
In the US, Netflix carries the rights alongside Hulu, which will also get a weekly simulcast release shortly after new episodes air on Nippon TV in Japan. Viz Media is distributing. Netflix will also release the weekly episodes in Canada, most Latin American regions, Australia, and New Zealand. Other regions are TBD.
