Grey’s Anatomy, the ABC medical drama could soon be departing from Netflix in either 2019 or 2020 according to a report from Deadline. Here’s what we know about Grey’s Anatomy on Netflix and how likely it is that Grey’s Anatomy will leave.
The report takes a look at Netflix’s current output that we’ve covered in depth over the years such as the fact the United States recently surpassed 1,000 Originals and that at the start of the year 16% of the total library was made up of Originals.
In the report, it led to a few lines about what competitors of Netflix are up to and spoke about a few titles we already know are soon to leave such as Friends and The Office.
Most importantly as it pertains to this article, it mentions Grey’s Anatomy in the following context:
Grey’s Anatomy, for example, is a huge Netflix draw that will be pulled from the platform soon in order to be marshaled for Disney’s soon-to-launch streaming service.
It’s no secret big conglomerates are prepping their libraries for the ongoing streaming war. Disney, in particular, has been ruthless at yanking contracts away from streaming services like Netflix.
We couldn’t find any further evidence that Grey’s Anatomy was leaving Netflix and we’d dispute that the series would go to Disney+. Disney+ is being targetted as a family friendly platform with ABC and Freeform content remaining on Hulu.
Grey’s Anatomy is actually already streaming on Hulu but only acting as a catch-up for the current season. Speaking of the current season, we are currently expecting season 15 of Grey’s Anatomy to be on Netflix by the summer.
Will Grey’s Anatomy actually leave Netflix?
One important thing we should mention is that titles like Grey’s Anatomy are often considered “legacy contracts”. Except with rare circumstances these shows have stayed on Netflix.
In conclusion, it’s best to treat this news as an advisory rather than set in stone. We don’t think the series will necessarily leave but with the streaming wars heating up, it’s definitely not completely out of the question.
In the meantime, Shonda Rhimes, the creator of the show is, in fact, making eight series for Netflix over the coming years.
