Netflix has been streets ahead by having all six seasons of Community on its service for the past few years, but that will soon be coming to an end, with all six seasons scheduled to depart on April 1st, 2024.
The show has been streaming on Netflix globally for exactly four years, with all six seasons touching down on the service on April 1st, 2020. It was a perfect addition to Netflix at the time, given that it was added during the early stages of the pandemic when more and more people were staying at home. Many regions did stream the show before it was re-added in 2020. The UK, for example, streamed the show between 2015 and 2017.
Following the series release onto Netflix, we saw the show’s popularity skyrocket according to some external tools.
This removal shouldn’t come as a huge surprise to long-time followers of our site. We first cited the show being subject to removal for 2024 last year. The removal isn’t showing in the Netflix app yet, but it will be in the coming weeks. Once there, the notice will state that your last day to watch the show will be March 31st.
Of course, it’s worth noting that Netflix could reverse its decision to remove the show (all removals and additions to Netflix are subject to change) and strike a new deal, but our intel suggests that’s not happened yet and won’t be happening either.
The good news is that the show still resides on Hulu, with all six seasons available. We’d also expect the show to be heading to Peacock in the near future. The show also resides on other streaming services in international territories. For example, the show is also available on ITVX in the United Kingdom.
Community Movie is Still Bound for Peacock
As you may have been tracking, a long-awaited movie for Community was announced in late 2022, with Donald Glover confirming the movie will revolve around a college reunion.
In a more recent interview with Donald Glover in early February 2024, the actor who plays Troy Barnes in the series told Entertainment Tonight that the “script is done” for the upcoming movie, saying that it’s “really just a schedule thing,” with regards to when cameras begin rolling.
Of course, Peacock doesn’t exist globally, so it’ll be interesting to see if Netflix could snap up the rights for the movie in any territory. Without the main series streaming, it’ll likely be a tall order.
Although this is a big loss for the Netflix library (particularly for me), there’s some good news. Netflix has been picking up some other licensed comedy series lately. Those in the United States will be treated to two new series in March, including The Jamie Foxx Show and Martin. Netflix US recently also got the Disney-owned series My Wife & Kids and The Wonder Years.
