It’s time for another preview, and below, we’ll take a look at Netflix’s upcoming roster of horror movies currently announced with them either in development, pre-production, or awaiting release for 2024 or beyond.
Horror is a genre you could very easily argue Netflix hasn’t given the love it deserves with a relatively weak lineup in years prior. While what’s set to come isn’t quite as impressive as some of its studio rivals who are sitting on decades of beloved IP, there are still some great new titles to look forward to.
This is one of multiple genre previews we’ve published to kickstart 2024. Other recent articles we published include a big look at the new fantasy series on the way, all the new sci-fi movies, and sports docs.
Every Horror Movie In Development at Netflix in 2024 & Beyond
Bioshock
Easily our most anticipated on this movie list is the upcoming video-game adaptation of 2K Games’ action horror franchise – Bioshock. Set to be directed by Francis Lawrence and written by Michael Green, the game is set in an underwater city called Rapture that’s, frankly, gone to hell with citizens of the utopia having been overrun by genetically altered humans who got addicted to a substance called ADAM.
Fear Street: Prom Queen
As we were among the first to report, a fourth Fear Street movie is definitely on the way to Netflix, set to adapt Prom Queen. As you may recall, Netflix released a trilogy of Fear Street movies over the summer of 2021 to critical acclaim. Adapting the works of R. L. Stine, the new entry will get underway with production in early 2024.
Frankenstein
As we exclusively revealed, Guillermo del Toro has set his next major live-action movie at Netflix, and it’s going to be a period horror movie based on the classic Mary Shelley book.
The huge cast already assembled for the feature film includes Jacob Elordi, Mia Goth, Oscar Isaac, David Bradley, Christoph Waltz, Lars Mikkelsen, and Christian Convery.
Gordon Hemingway & The Realm of Cthulhu
Announced in February 2021, this movie comes from director Stefon Bristol (See You Yesterday) and tells the story of a roguish Black American teaming up with an elite warrior to rescue a kidnapped regent from an ancient evil.
Based on an original screenplay by Hank Woon with additional revisions by both Woon and Fredrica Bailey.
I Am Not Alone
Announced in March 2023, this feature film will adapt the short story written by Chris Hicks, with Jessica Chastain to star and Misha Green to direct. The plot revolves around a mother who is forced to defend her family against a threat only she can see.
Pedro Páramo
Rodrigo Prieto is directing this new adaptation of the Juan Rulfo novel for Netflix Mexico.
Here’s what you can expect from the fantasy horror:
“Follows a dusty road to a town of death. Time shifts from one consciousness to another in a hypnotic flow of dreams, desires, and memories, a world of ghosts dominated by the figure of Pedro Páramo lover, overlord, murderer.”
Production on the movie got underway in May 2023 and is expected to premiere at some point in 2024.
Planet of the Dead
Zack Snyder began his Netflix journey with Army of the Dead back in 2021 and will be returning to the franchise with the announced sequel, Planet of the Dead, which will see him co-write alongside Shay Hatten and see the return of Omari Hardwick.
While it doesn’t seem that Planet of the Dead is anywhere close to becoming a reality at the moment, Zack Snyder did recently tease what we can expect from the movie, saying, “My idea for Army 2 is Planet of the Dead, which is a much more – [it] scales in a crazy way, so super excited about it. Right now, obviously I’m trying to run parallel courses with these two monsters, but [I’m] really excited that people are excited to see more from the Army universe because I love it.”
Smile
Announced back in February 2022 without much news since is Smile with William McGregor set to direct and write with Helen Kingston with 6th & Idaho producing.
The plot for the movie is as follows, “Millie’s life is turned upside-down when a vampire bites her. She soon learns that the process can be reversed if she kills the vampire who bit her before the next sunrise.”
This Beast (aka The Beast)
The creator behind Sons of Anarchy and Mayans MC has a couple of major projects in the works at Netflix, with The Abandons being the biggest, but announced in March 2021 is This Beast which Kurt Sutter and Blumhouse Television would produce.
Inspired by The Beast of Gevaudan, the movie is set to tell the story of an 18th-century English village besieged by a mysterious and elusive beast.
The Deliverance
Lee Daniels, the famous director behind The Butler and The Paperboy, will be headed to Netflix for the first time with this new horror thriller, The Deliverance.
The plot revolves around a family that lives in a home in Indiana and discovers demonic occurrences that convince them and the community that the house is a portal to hell.
The cast for the feature film includes Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Glenn Close, Omar Epps, and Caleb McLaughlin.
Per the production company behind the movie, The Deliverance is confirmed for a 2024 release. More on the upcoming horror in our full preview for The Deliverance.
The Goon
Moving to animation for this next one, we have The Goon, which is being put together by Tim Miller (best known for his work on Netflix’s Love, Death & Robots) and his animation studio Blur Studio with Patrick Osborne directing.
The Platform Sequel
In May 2023, Netflix Spain announced that it’d be giving a sequel to The Platform, which remains one of the most-watched Netflix Original international movies of all time.
Filming began in May with Milena Smit and Hovik Keuchkerian returning with the movie being directed by Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia.
Under the Seine / Sharks
Set to star Bérénice Bejo and Nassim Lyes; this new French-language action horror comes from esteemed writer/director Xavier Gens.
The movie is about a scientist called Sophia who learns that a large shark is swimming deep in the river in Paris.
Now, rounding out the preview, we wanted to touch on a few movies that were announced in development at one point or another but have either been scrapped or have simply been in development for so long that we suspect that it’s quietly fallen away.
- Bird Box Spin-off – In 2023 we got the release of the first international spin-off for Bird Box but it’s unclear where a sequel for the original Sandra Bullock movie is in development.
- My Wife and I Bought a Ranch… – This was announced back in 2020 and nothing has come out since. 21 Laps Entertainment was due to produce with Harrison Query working on the screenplay based on a short story by Matt Query.
- The Inheritance – This movie was scrapped by Netflix. It was written by Joe Russo and Chris LaMont and would’ve starred Bob Gunton and Peyton List.
- The Hills Have Eyes for You – Eli Craig was supposed to direct this horror movie first announced in June 2020 but the project has gone quiet since.
- The Unsound – This was one of the many movies announced to be in development from Netflix’s overall deal with Boom! Studios with David F. Sandberg set to direct. All has gone quiet since 2019.
