It’s time for another genre preview! Below, we’ll be taking a look at Netflix’s upcoming fantasy movies from around the world. These include titles still in development and those either confirmed for release in 2024 or expected either this year or beyond.
If you want to see what new and returning fantasy series are on the way to Netflix throughout 2024 and beyond, we’ve got you covered with another preview we’ve worked on. Elsewhere, we’ve also looked into upcoming sci-fi movies, British titles, and lots more, which can all be found in our What’s Coming to Netflix section.
New Fantasy Movies Confirmed for Release on Netflix in 2024
Spaceman
Coming to Netflix: March 1st, 2024
OK, this new Adam Sandler movie probably deserves to be considered a sci-fi movie above all else. Still, it’s got a talking spider in it, so I’d consider that enough to warrant it being considered a fantasy movie, too.
Based on the book by Jaroslav Kalfar and directed by Johan Renck, the movie follows a young orphan who defies the odds and becomes the country’s first astronaut.
Damsel
Coming to Netflix: March 8th, 2024
Originally due out on Netflix in 2023, Damsel will finally be hitting Netflix in March 2024 and see Millie Bobby Brown in another defining role on the streamer, with her biggest undoubtedly being as Eleven in Stranger Things.
Directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, the movie sees Brown play the role of a princess called Elodie, who has been waiting for a prince to come and rescue her but takes matters into her own hands to escape instead.
From what we’ve heard about this film from people who attended test screenings, it sounds like a winner, so watch this space.
Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver
Coming to Netflix: April 19th
Another title that’s as much sci-fi as it is fantasy is the return of Rebel Moon shortly after the premiere of Part 1 in December 2023. The second big entry, filmed back-to-back with the first, will continue the galactic war set up in the first movie.
Like the first movie, we’ll eventually see an R-rated extended cut released for Part 2 further down the line, but until then, this new entry will again be PG-13.
The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep
Coming to Netflix: Q4 2024
Carrying Netflix’s Witcherverse on its back almost single-handedly at this point are the animated feature films that come from the talented animation team Studio Mir.
Returning for a highly anticipated sequel, this TV-MA anime film has been confirmed to drop in late 2024, with Doug Cockle (known for the video games) returning to voice Geralt.
Family Pack
Coming to Netflix: Confirmed for 2024
New from Netflix France and Radar Films is this new comedy fantasy adventure movie that sounds like a mix of Jumanji and Twilight so far. Directed by François Uzan and starring Franck Dubosc, Jean Reno, and Suzanne Clement, the movie is about a mysterious card game that sees a family thrust back in time to a medieval village under siege from werewolves.
In Your Dreams
Coming to Netflix: Expected in 2024
Coming from the animation team, Kuku Studios is a new fantasy adventure that follows Stevie and her brother Elliot, who use magic to enter the realm of dreams.
The animated feature was notably missing from the Netflix 2024 schedule, but in numerous locations, it’s still slated for release this year.
The Old Guard 2
Coming to Netflix: Unclear
Serving as a sequel to the 2020 superhero fantasy comic book adaptation is The Old Guard 2, which was filmed throughout 2022 and has gone MIA ever since. Missing from the 2024 Netflix movie roster list, it’s unclear when this movie will hit our screens
Directed by Victoria Mahoney, the second movie will be adapting the second comic: Force Multiplied. Charlize Theron returns as Andy in the sequel with newcomers and returning cast members, including Uma Thurman, Matthias Schoenaerts, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Henry Golding.
Uglies
Coming to Netflix: Confirmed for 2024
Again, leaning more into sci-fi than fantasy, but worthy of a mention just because of how long we’ve waited for this particular movie to release is Uglies. Set in a futuristic world, you’ll be following one young girl who gets to experience cosmetic surgery that’s applied to everyone as soon as they hit 16.
McG is behind the camera directing, with Joey King leading the film as the main character and an executive producer.
Fantasy Movies in Development at Netflix
In the case of all the movies below, they’ve either been announced, or they’re in development but are likely not in a position to be released on Netflix anytime soon. We’ve included the most significant projects here, but the reality is that far more have been announced, and we’ve excluded a few for brevity.
Alice in Wonderland
First announced in October 2020, it’s unclear how far along this musical fantasy adaptation of the classic literature is along.
Set to be called ALICE, the title comes from Alloy Entertainment’s Leslie Morgenstein and Elysa Dutton producing and Sabrina Carpenter starring and producing for her At Last Productions banner.
Dragons Lair: The Movie
Based on the classic Don Bluth video game, this fantasy adaptation follows Dirk the Daring, a knight who sets out to rescue Princess Daphne from the evil dragon Singe and a wizard named Mordroc. Ryan Reynolds was announced to be attached to the project back in early 2020.
The last anyone heard about the movie was in November 2022, when Ryan Reynolds said Netflix was taking a big swing with the fantasy movie. With that said, where it is in development or how close we are to seeing it on our screens is unknown. Since then, nothing has been said further on the matter, although Netflix has registered many other copyrights for other Don Blutch properties.
God Country
Coming from Legendary Entertainment, Aftershock Media and Nightshade Entertainment was this new comic book adaptation with Jim Mickle at the helm. There were rumors that production would begin in late 2023, but that has yet to materialize.
Per Image Comics, here’s what you can expect:
Emmet Quinlan, an old widower rattled by dementia, isn’t just a problem for his children—his violent outbursts are more than the local cops can handle. When a tornado levels his home—as well as the surrounding West Texas town—a restored Quinlan rises from the wreckage. The enchanted sword at the eye of the storm gives him more than a sound mind and body, however. He’s now the only man who can face the otherworldly creatures the sword has drawn down to the Lone Star State…”
Gordon Hemingway & The Realm of Cthulhu
Jonathan Majors was announced to be tapped to play Gordon Hemingway in this new fantasy movie set to be directed by Stefon Bristol and produced by Spike Lee. It was first announced in February 2021. As of January 2024, we’ve still had no word on where this movie is in development, and given that Majors’s career has hit a roadblock (to say the very least), it’s likely this one is on ice for the moment.
Onyeka and the Academy of the Sun
First announced in February 2022, Will Smith and David Oyelowo were teaming to bring to life the book by Tọlá Okogwu that’s about a teenager who learns she has powers and travels to Nigeria to learn more about her origins, where she discovers a threat to her newfound magical community.
Reborn
One of the many Millarworld movies that was part of the initial slate reveal was Reborn, written by Bek Smith (Captain Marvel) and directed by Chris McKay. The last official mention we got of the movie from Mark himself was back in July 2021, when he mentioned that Sandra Bullock was producing the movie.
The premise of the comics is as follows:
“Where do you go when you die? Not heaven or hell; somewhere else. Somewhere you have to fight to survive. Somewhere the people from the past are waiting for you—the good and the bad.”
Sandkings
First announced in 2021 but gone quiet since is the fantasy sci-fi adaptation of the George R.R. Martin novel that was set to be written by Dennis Kelly and directed by Gore Verbinski.
Since the initial report from Collider, news about the movie has gone quiet.
The Chronicles of Narnia
If you can quite believe it, Narnia has been with Netflix now for its sixth year in 2024, although there’s not really a lot to show for it. While development has been on the go for quite some time, we finally got more news in the last couple of years, with Greta Gerwig attached to direct at least two movies for the streamer.
The last we heard (not confirmed) was that the starting place for Narnia on Netflix would be The Silver Chair. We’ve got more on what that means and more in our full preview of Narnia on Netflix.
The Kane Chronicles
From the author of the Percy Jackson book series, which has recently found success on Disney+ with a new series, The Kane Chronicles movie franchise has been long planned at Netflix but has gone quiet since the last public update in mid-2022.
Troll 2
Somewhat surprisingly, Troll is currently Netflix’s most-watched movie of all time on the non-English side. Given that fact, it should be somewhat unsurprising that a sequel was greenlit with director Roar Uthaug returning.
Untitled Jason Bateman/John Cena/Netflix Project
First announced in February 2023 is a new action-comedy movie with a fantasy vibe (and strong parallels to Night at the Museum) that’s about a family that gets stuck at an abandoned movie studio that comes to life. John Cena is set to star.
What new fantasy movie are you most looking forward to on Netflix in the year (or years) to come?
